What exactly are free promo codes and how do they work?

A promo code, discount code or coupon code is usually a mix of numbers and letters that allow you to save on your shopping with a particular store or brand. When you’re shopping online, you’ll often find a promo code field during the checkout process – you just enter the valid code there and it will be applied before you finalise your payment.

Coupon codes have actually been around for centuries (Coca-Cola made the first one in 1887), with brands offering exclusive deals in newspapers, magazines and catalogues. For the in-store versions, you usually just need to show the coupon or have it scanned to get the deal.

Just like sales and other retail promotions, codes are a way for brands to encourage people to shop, ideally increasing their profits. But for those of us shopping, a great promo code, sale or other deal can also help you save on whatever it is you want or need to buy. In fact, ‘couponing’ is a very real thing, especially in North America – there’s even a section on Reddit with over 46200 followers!

Sales events and other promotions

Sales are even more popular than promo codes, with stores usually having several sales each year or even a permanent ‘sales’ section online. But the biggest savings are often found during seasonal shopping events, when a huge range of stores all offer discounts at the same time. In Australia, this includes:

  • Black Friday/Cyber Monday: A four-day mega sale that officially starts on the last Friday in November and goes through to the following Monday. But it’s become so popular, many sales start early and run well into December.
  • Boxing Day: Traditionally held on December 26, the day after Christmas, but can run for several days or weeks.
  • End of Financial Year (EOFY): June 30 is the last day of the financial year in Australia, and many retailers have big sales around this time.
  • Click Frenzy: There are usually three to four Click Frenzy sales per year, such as the big Click Frenzy Main Event in November and Click Frenzy Mayhem in May.
  • Amazon Prime Day: This sale offers exclusive events for Amazon Prime members. In 2024, the Prime Day sale ran between July 16 and 21, with a huge range of deals. To give you an idea, we found savings of $200 and over 40% on some of our favourite items.
  • Afterpay Day: This twice-yearly sale gives you a way to save with brands that let you buy now and pay later through you Afterpay account. Afterpay Day sales are usually in March and August.

As well as these deals, some retailers have dedicated stocktake or clearance sales at key times of the year. There are also brands that offer seasonal or regular catalogues packed full of deals, such as Spotlight, Big W and Woolworths. So there’s almost always a way to save.
