What you need to know before buying a doona or quilt
In Australia, these terms are largely used interchangeably to describe a soft fabric bag filled with insulating material used as a top bed cover. While “doona” is the most common local term, “quilt” is often used by retailers, and “duvet” is the preferred name in Europe and North America.
GSM stands for “grams per square metre” and refers to the weight and density of the filling inside the quilt. A lower GSM (150–250) is ideal for summer or hot sleepers, while a higher GSM (500+) provides the heavy, cosy warmth needed for cold winter nights.
The best approach is to select a quilt that is one size larger than your mattress to ensure it drapes over the edges and prevents drafts. For example, many people with a Queen-sized bed prefer a King-sized doona to provide extra coverage and avoid “tugging” matches with a partner.
Synthetic microfibre, polyester, or bamboo fillings are generally the best choices because they are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites. Many of these options are also treated with anti-microbial coatings and can be washed frequently at high temperatures to maintain a sterile sleep environment.
A TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) rating measures the thermal insulation of a quilt, indicating how effectively it traps heat. Ratings typically range from 4.5 TOG for a lightweight summer quilt to 13.5 or 15 TOG for a high-insulation winter doona.
Natural, high-breathability fibres like bamboo, Tencel, and light-loft wool are the most effective at regulating body temperature. These materials excel at “wicking” moisture away from the skin, which prevents that damp, chilled feeling that often follows a hot flush.
