To have the coolest sleep during summer, it’s a good idea to invest in sheets made from naturally breathable and moisture-wicking materials. Linen, bamboo, Tencel and Percale cotton sheets are your best bets for cooling spring and summer sheets.
Material: As mentioned, natural fibres like linen, bamboo, Percale cotton and Tencel are great options for summer. You’ll want to avoid materials like polyester, flannel, microfibre and silk, which can trap heat.
Thread count: A higher thread count usually means more threads are packed into a square inch of fabric, resulting in a denser and possibly thicker fabric. However, it’s not always a perfect measure so don’t judge your decision purely based on thread count.
Price: The cost of bed sheets can range significantly, with the price tag reflecting the quality of the material and manufacturing process. For example, sheets made from 100 per cent French flax linen will be more expensive than a bamboo or cotton blend. In saying this, it doesn’t mean you have to fork out a pretty penny for top-quality sheets. We’ve made sure our guide above covers budgets of all ranges, all without sacrificing quality so you’re guaranteed to love the sheets you end up purchasing.
When it comes to shopping for a new set of fresh bed sheets it’s important to consider your preference for a more structured or softer set. In terms of thread count (TC), sheets with a higher count will be more structured and firm, whereas a lower count will be a looser and soft sheet.
It is also important to note, that higher thread counts – anything over 700 TC, will be a lot warmer of a sheet. Considering the Australian climate, a sheet set with a 400 TC to 600 TC is most desirable – still soft to the touch but also breathable enough to prevent moisture build-up.
