In the Facebook group Plants at Home, one clever indoor gardener recently shared an image of a mini monstera climbing up a wall.
“Look at this mini monstera making its way across the apartment. It won’t stop putting out leaves. One after another,” says the caption.
Other group members can’t get enough of this gorgeous plant and how far it’s climbed up the wall.
“I really want to do this!” said one commenter.
“Strange question, how is the pot attached to the wall?” asked another. To which someone replied, “Looks like magic to me!”
“I didn’t even know they could climb!!” another chimed in.

While everyone loves the plant, lots of people also fell in love with the pot the mini monstera is growing in, too.

How do you get mini monstera to climb the wall?
Aerial roots on a mini monstera are specialised roots that grow above the ground or attach to structures like walls or trees. These roots allow the plant to anchor and support itself as it climbs and grows.
If you want to help your mini monstera plant climb the wall, you’ll need a set of plant clips. As your plant grows more aerial roots, you can add more support clips to guide it across your wall.
Tips for training your mini monstera to climb the wall
- Avoid walls that are exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, as it can cause leaf burn.
- Make sure the plant clips aren’t too tight, as it can restrict growth or damage the stems. Regularly check and adjust the plant clips or ties as the plant continues to climb.
- Install a trellis or plant support system on the wall to provide a structure for the mini monstera to climb. You can use a variety of materials such as wooden trellises or a bamboo or moss pole.
- As the mini monstera grows, you may need to prune and train the plant to encourage upward growth. Trim any excess foliage or vines that are not following the desired path. This will direct the plant’s energy towards vertical growth and keep it tidy.
What is a mini monstera?
Mini monstera, also known as ginny philodendron, philodendron minima, or philodendron piccolo, is a tropical vining plant native to Southeast Asia.
Despite its nickname, a mini monstera (Rhaphidophora tetrasperma) is not a true monstera plant species.
The mini monstera leaves are similar in appearance to the leaves of the true Monstera deliciosa, featuring fenestrations or split leaves with distinctive holes and notches. However, the leaves of the mini monstera are typically smaller in size.
Mini monstera care
Mini monsteras are known for their rapid growth and ability to climb or trail, making them suitable for hanging baskets or climbing plants on trellises or walls.
Light, water and soil
They prefer bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Like many tropical plants, they thrive in moderately humid environments and benefit from regular watering when the top inch or so of soil feels dry.
