When Sallie and Ben Burgess decided to renovate their bathroom on a budget, they were not playing around.

Picking up an $80 low line solid timber TV cabinet off Facebook marketplace, the husband and wife team were able to transform the piece into a new vanity for their bathroom.
With a new lick of paint and the addition of four legs, this DIY project was only the start of their gorgeous country-style bathroom, which cost less than $1,000 to complete.
They used the following products from Bunnings on the cabinet: Taubman’s 3 in1 prep; Taubman’s professional water-based enamel colour inner circle; Estilo round countertop sinks; and timber furniture legs.
We caught up with Sallie to find out more about the amazing project.
What motivated you and where did you draw your inspiration from?
Living on a 40-acre hobby farm there was a strong desire to create a country retreat-style bathroom that complemented the beautiful exterior. With a can-do attitude, we wanted to try this renovation ourselves and I’m glad we did.
How did you find the whole renovation process?
There was a lot of team work involved and we really enjoyed it. My husband Ben and I removed the tiles together. Ben also levelled and laid the new floors while I took to the painting.
Besides the $80 spent on the cabinet, how much did it cost for everything else?
At the end of the renovation, the total came to $984, so just a fraction under $1000. This sum includes the wall panels, flooring, sinks, taps, cabinet, hardware and mirrors. All the paint and tools used we already had from other projects.
Do you have any tips or tricks for anyone wanting to attempt a similar reno?
I always draw what I envision and list all the products I need to purchase with prices. Another great tip is to always measure everything twice. Lastly, make sure you order things a few weeks prior to the demo so you’re able to complete the whole process smoothly and quickly.
