Spring is an ideal time to start a new lawn from seed when temperatures are mild and the new grass has a chance to establish before the summer heat.
Paul Wynn, Horticulture Consultant to Munns says: “Growing a lawn from seed is far more economical than buying and laying turf. I also think it’s more rewarding as you watch it take shape into the perfect venue for backyard barbecues and cricket!”
Paul has shared his top tips to growing a successful lawn from seed.
Choose the right lawn seed
There are different lawn seed varieties available that are suitable for full sun or part shade and lawns that will tolerate wear and tear from kids and pets.
Munns Couch is a hardy grass that’s resistant to drought whilst Munns Kikuyu is less susceptible to common turf pests and diseases than some other varieties.
Loosen your soil
Ensure you remove any existing weeds and grasses first, so your new lawn doesn’t have to compete with them. Continue to then loosen up the soil surface with a garden fork or rake as lawn seed will establish best in soft soil.
Fertilise your seeds
To make it easier to sow lawn seed and to help get it off to a great start, mix the seed with an organic based seed starter fertiliser and spread the mix evenly over the area.
Keep your soil moist
It’s crucial to keep the soil moist while the lawn seed germinates and the young seedlings establish, so you’ll need to be vigilant with your watering for several weeks and during your new lawn’s first summer.
Go organic
After around six weeks, it will be time to give your lawn a feed to promote lush healthy growth. An organic based lawn fertiliser, such as Munns Professional Organic will promote a lovely dark green lawn as well as helping improve soil health.
