Get the best looking lawn on the street with these easy tips and tricks for your grass.
1. Beat the bindiis
Don’t let your bare feet be prickled by these pesky weeds through the summer months. Kill them off before they have a chance to set their spiny seeds by spraying in early spring with a lawn-weeder herbicide. Or use a combined weed-and-feed product, which will also fertilise the grass at the same time.
2. Tidy up the tracks
If your lawn has messy tracks through it, caused by frequent trips to the clothesline or the bins around the side, fix the problem the easy way. Buy some large format square pavers (40 x 40cm) and set them into the lawn to create a stepping stone pathway. It will look instantly much neater, and you can run the mower straight over the top.
3. Patch it up
Instead of buying a lawn-patch product to fill bare spots, do it the DIY way. Dig up random runners which have grown into garden beds or over paths, and plant these into the bare spots (lightly cultivate the soil first). Sprinkle some lawn fertiliser over the top and keep well watered until they start to spread.
4. Keep it green
If your neighbour’s lawn is always lusher and greener than yours, it’s probably because they set their mower blades a little higher – it’s that simple! A lawn is actually a little forest of grass blades and by leaving them a little taller, you get more green matter, plus the soil is better insulated – which means it doesn’t dry out as quickly. It’s a win-win!
