Indoor plants are known for their health and wellbeing benefits, as well as their air-purifying abilities. However, it turns out that Australian home makers prefer one indoor plant above all else – and it isn’t the plant that you might immediately think of.
The peace lily, fiddle leaf fig and golden pothos have all had their moment in their limelight, but according to sales data collected by Bunnings, it’s the monstera deliciosa that appears in most Australian homes.
The monstera is an adaptable plant variety that will survive both indoors and outside. Also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, the monstera deliciosa can grow up to 4-5m tall. It can also adapt to live in almost any climate, except extreme cold.
The only state in Australia where the monstera deliciosa was knocked off its first-place perch was in the Northern territory, where the croton proved to be most popular.
The croton plant is available in a variety of shapes and colours, and likes to be kept in warm places. The care instructions will vary depending on the variety you chose – some like lots of light while others don’t, but don’t water it until the soil is dry, and refrain from moving it too often.
However, if you’re looking for a way to radically differentiate your monstera from all the other monstera plants in Australian homes, perhaps the ultra-rare and expensive Thai Constellation variegated monstera is for you. It’s a small indoor vine with white-dappled leaves that has only been available in Australia since March. However, it’ll set you back between $300 to $1000 if you want one for yourself.
