3 simple shopping tweaks to eat (and feel) better

Little shifts that can have a big impact!

For many of us, the weekly grocery shop is just another task to tick off our to-do lists. But every piece of produce we buy can have a major impact on the health of our family and the planet.

From planning your meals in advance to bringing a reusable bag, there’s an abundance of ways you can improve your shopping habits for the better. Below, discover easy shopping tweaks to keep in mind for your next grocery run.

1. Shop around the perimeter

Healthy foods — like fresh produce, lean protein, dairy and whole grains — are often stacked and stored around the perimeter of a grocery store. So, where possible, stick to shopping along the edges of your local shop to avoid the sweet temptations of the chocolate aisle.

Also along the perimeter, the frozen aisle is a great place to discover healthy produce. Frozen protein, fruits and vegetables are convenient to have on hand for quick and easy meal prep, smoothies, and last-minute mid-week dinners (plus, they have a much longer shelf life than fresh produce).

2. Choose sustainable protein

Protein is an essential part of our diet, helping our bodies gain strength and muscle mass. Tofu, lentils, and chickpeas are all delicious forms of plant-based protein with low environmental impact.
But when it comes to meat, there’s a variety of factors to consider when choosing the most sustainable option.

Look for pasture-raised or grass-fed animals with access to outdoor spaces where they can graze on natural vegetation. This lifestyle supports soil health and biodiversity while improving the nutritional quality, as grass-fed meat tends to be leaner and higher in certain nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids.

“The greenhouse gas emissions per kilo of chicken are much less than that of other land animals such as for pork, lamb, and beef. This makes chicken one of the most sustainable forms of land animal protein,” says Anne-Marie Mooney, Chief Operations Officer at Ingham’s.

When it comes to choosing high quality poultry to enjoy with your family, Ingham’s is a good choice, as animal welfare and sustainability come first and foremost. They nurture their chickens with nutritious food and clean water, allowing them to comfortably move and mingle.

3. Plan ahead

While it seems like an obvious tip, preparing a shopping list can help you stay focused in the grocery store. Avoiding unnecessary or impulse purchases can save you money, keep your health goals in check, and reduce food wastage.

Add a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to your list to ensure you’re getting a balanced diet, and prep some healthy snacks and meals in advance.

So, before you grab your reusable bags and head to the shops this week, take a few moments to meal prep with sustainable produce to eat — and feel — better.
