From crispy hot chips to perfectly cooked roast dinners and decadent brownies, the versatility and convenience of air fryers have made them one of the most popular kitchen appliances around. As well as making it easy to cook delicious meals with less (or no) oil, the best air fryers are also energy efficient and faster than traditional appliances. There’s often less cleaning up afterwards, too.
“Air fryer technology has changed the way we create crispy and crunchy recipes in our homes. Since being introduced to the market, air fryers have become a must-have appliance for the kitchen,” Tania Grillinzoni, a category expert from The Good Guys, told Better Homes and Gardens Australia.

05
Tefal Easy Fry Silence Essential Air Fryer 5L
from $149.95 (usually $179.95), Tefal
Best for: a quiet air fryer
Launched in April 2025, Tefal’s exclusive Silent Technology means this air fryer can make it easier to talk (or just hear yourself) when it’s in use. With a noise level of just 48dB when tested in air fry mode while cooking french fries, it’s around the same level as a quiet conversation.
To put this in perspective a bit more, normal conversation is around 60dB while water running in a creek is 40dB according to data from Australian consultancy specialist Safe Environments. So this air fryer is somewhere in between what you’d hear by a creek or when talking normally.
As well as being quiet, it features 10 preset programs, temperatures from 40°C to 220°C and an intuitive touch screen. Testing has also shown that it uses 70% less energy and cooks twice as fast as traditional ovens.
Key features:
- 5L capacity
- Very quiet, with noise levels under 50dB
- 10 cooking programs: french fries, chicken nuggets, bacon, prawns, roast chicken, pizza, steak, vegetables, fish and cake

Cuisinart XXL 10.4L Air Fryer
$279 at Amazon
Best for: an air fryer with ceramic non-stick coating

As well as air frying, you can roast, grill, bake and dehydrate – and it automatically keeps food warm until you’re ready for it.
“Highly recommend this air fryer! Looks really stylish on the counter, and it appears to be of good quality. The price was very reasonable as well. What To Consider When Choosing An Air Fryer
Air fryers have become a game-changing kitchen appliance, leading to viral air fryer recipes, best-selling books from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Steph De Sousa and plenty of rave reviews from customers.
But there isn’t just one air fryer that’s best for everyone. Instead, thinking about what you want from an air fryer can help you get the right one for your home. That includes considering what you want to cook with it, the different sizes available and how much guidance or inspiration you want (i.e. would you use a free recipe app?).
Size and capacity
Air fryers are compact and work as mini turbo-charged convection ovens. The first step is to find the right size and capacity for your cooking needs.
“Air fryers consist of a basket to place the food in. The bigger the basket, the more you can cook at once. With smaller air fryers, you would easily be able to roast a cut of meat. Whereas a larger air fryer allows for more space to add vegetables into the basket to cook at the same time,” explains Grillinzoni.
- 0.5L – 2L is suited to a single person household
- 2L – 4L is suited to couples or small families
- 4L – 6L is ideal for families of 3-5 people
Keep in mind that the actual cooking space might be different to the listed capacity for an air fryer. This is because some manufacturers measure the total space inside the air fryer and whatever you put in it needs space around it to cook properly. For example, if you wanted to roast a whole chicken, you’d typically need to look at air fryers with a capacity of more than 4L (think closer to 4.5L and upwards). It also depends on the shape of the air fryer and the size of whatever you’re cooking.
Air fryers aren’t essential for every kitchen but they can be incredibly convenient and valuable if you regularly cook chips, chicken, other meat or typically crispy food. As well as potentially reducing the amount of oils and fats you cook with, they can save time and lower energy costs.
The different sizes available also mean you can choose a model to suit your kitchen space – or even a motor home. Sleek designs also leave it up to you whether you want to keep your air fryer on your kitchen benchtop or store it after every use.
“Air fryers are convenient because they work as a benchtop appliance, so when you are finished with them, they can be easily stored away in the cupboard for next time. There is no need to have special cabinetry made to incorporate your air fryer into the kitchen,” The Good Guys category expert Tania Grillinzoni told the Better Homes and Gardens team.
Most models also have a range of cooking modes, and the air fryer recipes out there cover everything from delicious dinners to delectable cakes and other desserts.
So ultimately an air fryer could be worth it if you think you’ll use it, but if you’re happy cooking with the appliances you already own, you might not want or need one.
Ninja, Philips, Tefal and Breville are four of the most popular air fryer brands in Australia, with Google data showing Aussies make an average of 1000-100,000 searches each month for air fryers from these brands. But there are plenty of great air fryers on the market from both best-selling and lesser-known brands, including Instant Pot’s Vortex air fryer brand, Baccarat, and Sunbeam.
So although the brand could help you choose an air fryer, it’s just as important to consider the air fryer’s different features, including cooking modes, size and other details like the warranty and price.
If you’re not a fan of the cleaning up after making a feast, the good news is that air fryers are known for their ease of cleaning up.
“Unlike deep fryers or convectional ovens, after use you can simply allow to cool, remove the basket and wipe down with a sponge, or hand wash if you choose to, and you’re ready to start cooking again,” Tania Grillinzoni said.
A lot of air fryers also have dishwasher-safe removable parts, which makes it even easier.
Anything close to liquid, melty cheese or over-seasoned items won’t fare well, as they’ll likely end up oozing through the air fryer baskets and cause a whole lot of mess. Frozen items? Big yes. Soups, stews and broths? Probably not, although you can get air fryer accessories that make cooking different recipes a lot easier (and less messy).
It’s worth noting the list of things that can’t be cooked in an air fryer is generally outweighed by the list of things that can – brownies, bacon, toast! – but there are certain items that aren’t recommended for cooking in an air fryer.
Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to place your air fryer on any wooden surfaces, in unventilated areas or in close proximity to water sources. This also includes putting it too close to anything that’s potentially flammable, other appliances, on the stove area or sitting too close to a power outlet.
How we select the best air fryers on this list
