This Aussie airport is now a ‘quiet terminal’

Be careful you don’t miss your flight.

As many frequent flyers will know, the airport public announcements are usually what tip you off to the fact that check-in for your flight is going to close in five minutes, or that you should have been at your boarding gate ten minutes ago.

But one Australian airport has decided to do away with the loud announcements and have introduced a ‘quiet terminal.

Sydney Airport’s international terminal 1 will now be a quieter place to kick-back, relax and wait for your flight. Although regular announcements will continue to be made at boarding gates, only ‘critical’ information will be announced terminal-wide via the PA system. ‘Critical’ information has been identified as responses to alarms or emergency incidents.

That means no more passenger paging across the whole terminal, so you’ll now have to be on the ball and checking the departure and arrival screens at Sydney T1 to keep on top of your flights.

Sydney Airport follows in the footsteps of other international terminals which have now become ‘quiet terminals’, such as Dubai, Hog Kong, Helsinki, and Singapore’s Changi airport.

“We’ve worked closely with our airline partners and other stakeholders to ensure we’ve struck the right balance between providing a relaxing and stress-free environment and ensuring passengers have the information they need in terms of signage and updated flight information to assist them to get to their gate in a timely and efficient manner,” says Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert

Terminal-wide announcements will continue to be made at all other Sydney Airport terminals for domestic flights.

For all you frequently international travellers out there, be sure to make it to the airport in a timely manner, and don’t rely on an announcement to tell you when your flight is boarding or… leaving.
