We share step-by-step instructions to finish your knitting with this straightforward cast-off technique (sometimes also called binding off if you’re in the US).
How to cast off
Now that you’ve finished your project, whether it be a scarf, gloves or blanket, you need to complete your stitches so you can remove the knitting needles without the whole thing unravelling.
If you’re new to knitting, this part might sound complicated, but casting off is easier than it seems.
You can cast off in a knit stitch or purl stitch, depending on the stitch that would be knitted in the row you are on.
For this tutorial, though, we show you how to cast off knitwise – the easiest method for casting off that you need to learn.
Step-by-step instructions: casting off knitting
STEP 1
Start by knitting the first two stitches of the row as usual, but don’t go any further along as you usually would.
STEP 2
Insert the left-hand needle through the first stitch as shown. Lift this stitch over the other stitch on the righthand needle and over the needle point.
STEP 3
Knit another stitch so you have two on the right needle. Lift the first stitch over the second, then repeat Steps 1-3.
STEP 4
When you get to the last stitch, cut the yarn about 15cm away, feed it through the loop and pull through firmly to fasten off.
Once you’ve finished casting off your work, your project is done, and it’s time to find your next knitting project.
