Mum of two, Geneva Vanderzeil, gave her bathroom a warm update by making her own mirror cabinet. To get the luxe look for less, Geneva picked up an inexpensive mirror from Bunnings and created the shelves from some stunning Tasmanian oak timber.

Before and after.

Speaking to Better Homes and Gardens, Geneva revealed that she wanted to create a simple solution for bathroom storage that was affordable but also looked really elegant.

“It was a very simple design with shelves on the wall and a mirror that opens to create a medicine cabinet, and I think it works so well!”

Are you planning to attempt this DIY at home? We asked Geneva if she had any tips for our readers.

“For this project, it’s all about measuring properly and taking your time to cut the wood to get it right!”

Step-by-step guide to Geneva’s makeover

  1. Remove your old mirror to make way for new shelving.
  2. Using gloves and a metal scraper, remove the mirror from the tiles. Handy tip: Use a razor to remove any remaining glue off the tiles. During this step, wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes from any glass shards.
  3. Use painter’s tape and a laser level to work out where to place the shelves. Then grab a stud finder and use it to ensure you attach the shelves to the studs. Mark the tiles with a cross three times along each shelf length, showing where the screws must go for the L brackets to hold up the shelves.
  4. Use a ceramic drill bit on the centre of each marking to create a pilot hole in the tiles. Then attach all 12 L brackets to the wall.
  5. Once the shelves are ready, cut and oil any smaller pieces of the Tasmanian oak to place on the wall horizontally, cross-bracing the shelves. Use wood glue and nails to keep these pieces in place. This will give you a place to hang the mirror and close the medicine cabinet.
  6. To create storage behind the mirror, glue a mirror to some MDF. Then screw in some soft close hinges into the back.
  7. The shelves are now ready for the mirror. Glue the mirror onto some MDF, and once dry, attach some hinges. Hang the mirror in front of the cross bracing on the wall.
  8. To add the old bathroom cabinet. Remove the old cabinet door to give it a more modern look, and use cut-up pieces of the same Tasmanian Oak as the shelves to cover the old cabinet.
