Bathtub cover tips

Before covering a bathtub, here are some key things you should consider:

  • Purpose and use: determine why you want to cover your bathtub. Is it to reduce cleaning, create extra space, add a decorative element, or serve a specific functional purpose?
  • Material: choose a suitable material for the cover. It should be durable, water-resistant, and withstand moisture and humidity. Common materials include wood, acrylic, composite materials, or even fabric if you want a temporary solution.
  • Ventilation: ensure the cover allows for proper ventilation. Trapped moisture can lead to mould growth, so consider incorporating ventilation holes or gaps in the design to allow air circulation.
  • Size: accurate measurements are crucial. Measure your bathtub’s length, width, and depth to ensure the cover fits properly. Consider any additional space needed for hinges, handles, or other fixtures.
  • Weight: consider the weight of the cover. It should be manageable to lift and remove, especially if you use the bathtub frequently. A cover that is too heavy might become cumbersome to handle.
  • Safety: prioritise safety. Ensure the cover is stable when placed on the bathtub and won’t slip or tip over. If children or pets are in the household, ensure the cover is secure and won’t pose any hazards.
  • Cost: factor in the cost of materials, fabrication, and any additional features. Keep in mind that custom-made covers might be more expensive than ready-made options.
