This ‘60s furniture trend is making a big comeback

Groovy, baby!

It seems that interior design trends from the sixties and seventies are experiencing quite the revival right now. From conversation pits and macramé to rattan furniture and rich colour palettes, there’s never been a more appropriate time to relive the swinging sixties and seventies.

There are, of course, some major changes to these trends that make them 2019-appropriate. Shapes are sleeker, colours are muted and the materials are luxe. However, we didn’t expect the classic hanging chair to make the comeback that it has.

From the classic hanging version of the Arne Jacobsen Egg chair, to woven bamboo and rattan iterations, the hanging chair is once again the trend item du jour. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that this trend is very fun and funky, so you’ll need an interior scheme to complement that vibe.

Coastal, Scandinavian, bohemian, eclectic, minimal and all-white interior schemes with trendy accents will welcome a hanging chair. Just pick a chair made from natural materials in a sleek – rather than chunky – silhouette.

Au naturale

Pair a neutral interior with a natural woven egg-shaped chair, decorate with white faux fur pillows and throw rugs.

So boho

Capitalise on the circular-furniture trend and go for a half-circle chair. Pair with bohemian rugs, fairy light and graphic cushions for an enchanting look.

Sitting pretty

Perfect for girls’ bedrooms, a woven hanging chair in white will work in almost any scheme, from country-chic and French provincial to contemporary modern homes.

Contemporary

With a more defined shape than its round and egg-shaped counterparts, this hanging chair will fit snugly into corners.

Oh, so Scandi!

Plain and simple, this woven hanging chair adds texture to this otherwise simple bedroom, and ties into the exposed timber beams.

Outdoor bliss

Who said hanging chairs have to be indoors? Snuggle up with a book and a blanket on your porch or verandah with this gorgeous outdoor hanging chair.
