With many options available, it’s important to consider aesthetics and practicality.
We chatted with two paint colour experts to help you decide on the colours you should avoid for your fence.
How to choose a fence paint colour
The white picket fence
There are lots of reasons why people like a white picket fence, they’re light, fresh and go with any colour scheme. But there’s one huge drawback.
Kellie Richardson, founder of Kurved by Design and creator of ‘Botox of your home’, says to keep in mind white fences require lots of maintenance.
“While it is a bright and fresh look, it also shows the dirt and can look aged very quickly, meaning it requires higher upkeep,” Kellie warns.
So if it’s a white picket fence you’re after, be prepared to invest time in regular cleaning and maintenance.
Dark colours provide great contrast (with a catch)
Dark-coloured fences, including black, dark grey, or brown, make your garden stand out, providing a striking contrast against the lush greenery.
Rachael Langford, a professional colour consultant specialising in property exteriors, suggests that while these colours require less upkeep and maintenance, they can also close in a garden area and make it feel smaller.
Additionally, Rachael points out, “Darker fences attract and absorb more heat, which can impact both the plants and the overall garden environment.”
If you’re considering darker colours, select appropriate plants that can withstand the increased heat and sun exposure.
Choose bright colours with caution
While vibrant hues like pinks, purples, reds, and oranges might be tempting, Richardson advises against using them for your fence.
“Brighter colours are extremely distracting in a garden,” says Rachael. These colours can overwhelm the garden and the people living in or visiting the property.
Choose a colour that ties it all together
Rachael emphasises the importance of choosing colours that harmonise with your property’s colour palette.
“Avoid colours that aren’t used elsewhere on the property,” she suggests. You create a cohesive and visually appealing outdoor space by selecting colours already present in other elements, such as house trim or wall colours.
High-quality paint for longevity
Both experts stress the significance of using high-quality paint and primer designed for outdoor use.
In fact, proper paint selection and maintenance can significantly extend the life of your fence.
“All painted fences need constant upkeep as they are exposed to the harsh elements of Australia day in and day out,” Kellie says.
So, investing in quality paint and primer is a wise decision.
What type of paint should you use for a fence?
Kellie gives a quick rundown on the types of paint you can use for a fence.
Oil-based (satin/semi-gloss and gloss)
“Oil-based paints are longer lasting and more durable than water-based paints. This paint will take longer to dry, requires the use of chemicals to clean up and has a potent smell. This paint has a tough, enamelled finish that withstands outdoor elements.”
Water-based (acrylics)
“This type of paint is an all-purpose paint that is easy to clean with water and has little smell. This type of paint is better for the environment as it is less toxic. Water-based paint is more flexible and expands and contracts with temperature changes. It is more resistant to cracking and blistering but not as tough as oil-based paint.”
Primer
Primer is an undercoat that bonds a layer on the surface white and seals the wood for painting. This product blocks stains from wood and mildew, which form moisture.
