The new BILLY bookcase
First on our list is the BILLY bookcase. While the bookcase itself isn’t new, the new electric blue colour it comes in is. The colour is a nod to IKEA’s 2027 Colour of the Year, Luminous Blue.
Ainslie Woodham is the Home Furnishing and Retail Design Manager at IKEA Australia and New Zealand. She says, “The new BILLY in electric blue is a limited-edition twist on one of IKEA’s biggest icons, and it’s very much a colour moment.
“It’s a shade that’s bold, modern and made to stand out at home. Because it’s limited, fans should snap it up quickly. We expect this edition to sell out within the next few months,” she adds.
BILLY is more durable too
But it’s not just about the colour. IKEA has quietly upgraded BILLY too. They’ve swapped out the old wood veneer for a tough paper foil that’s supposed to make it more durable.
Ainslie says, “Some of the assembly has changed too: snap fittings now replace the nails that were previously used to attach the back panel. That means disassembly and reassembly are easier, with less wear and tear on BILLY over time.”

“The red-brown KALLAX isn’t a limited edition – it’s a new addition to the IKEA range, and it’s here to stay,” Ainslie confirms. “This colour has really been on the rise in Australia and New Zealand this year, especially as we’ve moved into the cooler season. It’s rich, grounding and warm, so it brings a bold hit of colour to the room, but in a way that still works seamlessly with other pieces in earth tones and neutrals.”
