Remember those endless summer days spent in your backyard? Creating your own imaginary world as you climbed, swung or just hid out in your cubby. Create those memories for your kids with these great playground ideas.
Terrific tree house
A tree house is a place where your kids can have their own space. It’s high up so grown ups can’t look inside. You don’t have to go too fancy either. Even just a timber platform set off the ground is enough for them to create something of their own. If it’s higher than a metre or so, make sure there are handrails around it to prevent any falls.
Ready to build
If coming up with your own design isn’t your thing, then choose from the wide range of pre-made cubby houses. All you have to do is pick them up from the hardware store and put them together. There are types to suit different aged children, different sized spaces and your budget.
Build a climbing frame
Keep your kids active and get their competitive juices flowing with an obstacle course. Build an A-frame out of treated pine, put a cargo net on one side and a rock-climbing wall on the other. Finish off with a ramp and climbing rope off one end. Challenge them to do a circuit and see if they can beat their best time!
Get creative
If you don’t have a large backyard, you can still create something for your kids with an outdoor art centrePaint a couple of plywood panels with chalkboard paint and screw them to a treated pine frame. Dress up the outside with some wide hardwood decking boards. Don’t forget to put one at the bottom so there’s somewhere for their chalk and a paint pot. Hang it on a fence and see what masterpieces are created.
