Renovating a backyard from plain to a multi-purpose entertaining and relaxing area for different members of the family is a big job. Thankfully, Charlie and Juliet are the prefect couple to take on this challenge with a blend of style and substance. A pergola will add height to a barbecue entertaining area while the rest of the garden is split into different zones that have something for every member of the family to enjoy. Along with some new plants and tidying up of existing ones, this backyard will soon be ready for summer!

Hammock tips

- Posts should be at least 90 x 90mm H4 treated pine and tall enough so hammock is 30cm off the ground when in use with at least 100mm of post above hanging fixtures.
- Hammock instructions should give the post spacing.
- Post holes should be at least 500mm deep and twice the post width.
- Add a 40mm deep layer, of fine drainage gravel to post holes, then 20mm of dry concrete mix before concreting in posts.
- Check for plumb on front and side of posts. They must never lean inwards.
- Use a stringline to check posts are aligned.
- Post can be temporarily braced – hammer in stakes 500mm out on side and rear, then clamp timber offcuts to stakes and posts.
- Wait until concrete for posts has fully set before adding hanging mechanism.
- All hanging fixtures for hammock must be heavy-duty and galvanised.
- For screw-in hooks or eyes, ensure you don’t make the pilot hole too large – they should be quite tight as you screw them in.
- To improve fixture strength for bolt-through eyes or hooks, replace the standard washer used beneath the nut with a galvanised square washer.
- Wait at least 24-48 hours after adding concrete before putting weight on hammock.
- If installing hammock in a garden area, add a landing pad – large format square 500mm pavers are ideal.
