4 myths about denim jeans you probably believe

From how to clean them to how to fit them.

Jeans are an everyday staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Regardless whether you are male or female, the cut, colour or style, jeans can be dressed up or down to suit a variety of occasions and events.  Jeans are also pretty expensive to buy, so you want to take care of them correctly, and buy a size that fits just right. Check out the four myths about denim jeans you probably believe below, and test your own knowledge about the humble cotton garment.

Myth #1 New jeans will stretch almost a whole size over time.

This isn’t exactly true. While non-stretch denim has a bit of give in it, allowing it to mould to the shape of your body, it won’t actually stretch. Jeans with a cotton/elastane mix won’t stretch out at all. The elastane content will help them bounce back to their original shape.

Myth #2 New jeans should be a little firm

This isn’t exactly true. When shopping for jeans they should feel comfortable as they as when you first try them on, don’t assume they’ll stretch to accommodate.

Myth #3 Put jeans in the freezer to clean them

This isn’t true at all. Freezing jeans will only temporarily remove smells and won’t clean them. The bacteria won’t die if you freeze jeans, they’ll just be preserved until you warm them up again. Wash them in cold water with a gentle detergent, or let them air outside in the sun, turned inside out, instead.

Myth #4 Wear jeans in the bath to stretch them out

This strange denim hack is only half true. While wearing your jeans in water might stretch them a little bit, it’s more likely that you’ll warp the shape and style of them.
