Home security is something most people don’t think about until it’s too late. If your family often spends weekends away at the beach shack, regularly go on holiday, or leave the house empty most of the time – then home security is an absolute must for you
And while you may assume installing the best internet-enabled security cameras and alarms is the key to a safe environment, it’s actually just one aspect of effectively securing your home.
In an interview with the UK’s This Morning program, Michael Fraser – a reformed burglar-turned-security expert – revealed that there are a number of inconspicuous ways you may be leaving your home vulnerable to intrusion.
“Don’t hang a calendar with holiday dates right near the window,” Fraser revealed, as smart thieves will just come back when they know you aren’t home.
The second piece of advice was to always use both locks on your front door, as an experienced burglar can tell when a dead lock isn’t engaged.
The third piece of advice may surprise dog owners who though Fido would ward off strangers with nefarious intentions. “Beware of dog signs are pointless because if the dog can move around in the house, so can a burglar,” said Fraser.
The takeaway? Always ensure you keep sensitive private information hidden, keep valuables out of sight from windows, always engage all the locks in the house, and never assume the threat of a dog will deter a thief. Instead, invest in some cameras that can be viewed remotely, and an alarm system.
