Setting up security cameras in your home can be tricky business. No longer do you have to call in a security company to install and monitor your system. These days, all you need is some wireless cameras and an app.
However, if you’ve gone down the DIY path, picked up some wireless, motion-sensor cameras that you can check up on via a smart-phone app, then you may be wondering where, exactly, you should put those cameras.
“Camera placement is one of the most important things to consider when setting up your new security system,” says home security camera expert Scott Cairns, CEO of Secure Your World. “The first thing to consider is what you need to see: different people have different needs.”
“Good placement of cameras not only gives you the best visibility but can also be used as a deterrent, because if a potential thief sees a camera they will not enter,” says Scott. For example, at the front of your house, Scott recommends putting a camera where everyone can see it, but ensure it is not obstructed by trees or other structures.
Which camera is best for my home?
Scott recommends a 100 per cent wire-free battery-operated WiFi cameras for the home. “They are simple to install, there’s no messy wires and the vision can be viewed from your mobile phone or other devices,” says Scott. “If you are looking for something wired, we always suggest using a professional to install them.”
What you should keep in mind about camera placement
Scott says it’s important to consider your camera placement carefully, and not just so you can catch anyone who might be up to no good.
“Always think about the privacy of others nearby,” says Scott. “It’s important to ensure you are not capturing footage of neighbours and others who have a reasonable right to privacy. We always ensure that customers not only select the right camera and most suitable equipment selected for their home, but that it’s also installed in the most appropriate way.”
