How to make a jumbo macramé wall hanger

Scale up your macramé and create this jumbo wall hanging

Before starting this project, refer to the Macramé knot guide to familiarize yourself with the knots used to complete the project.

This type of yarn can break easily, so take care not to pull it too tight – you may wish to practice the knots on a different yarn first.

Here’s how

Step 1 Tape the ends of the branch or dowel to your work surface or hang it from a door frame with S-hooks.

Step 2 Cut six lengths of wool, each 4m and attach them to the dowel using lark’s head knot.

Step 3 Starting from the left, using the image as a guide, make a row of 3 square knots.

Step 4 Leave out the first 2 lengths of wool and make a row of 2 square knots.

Step 5 Make a square knot underneath, joining the previous 2 knots.

Step 6 Cut 2 lengths of wool, each 4m, and use lark’s head knot to attach them to the branch or dowel, 1 at each side of the macramé piece.

Step 7 Using all the strands, make a row of diagonal double half hitch knots to the halfway point, then repeat, starting from the other side.

Step 8 Cut 4 lengths of wool, each 4m, and use lark’s head knot to attach them to the branch or dowel, 2 at each side of the macramé piece.

Step 9 Starting at the top right, use the new strands to make a square knot.

Step 10 Next, use 2 strands from the square knot just made and 2 strands from the double half hitch and make another square knot. Continue downwards in this way to the halfway point, then repeat the same steps from the top left down to the middle.

Step 11 Join the 2 diagonal lines of square knots with 1 square knot below, forming a V shape.

Step 12 Starting from the left, make a diagonal line using double half hitch knots, then repeat on the other side. Add 1 more diagonal line of double half hitch knots on each side, as shown.  Make a diagonal line of square knots on each side of the macramé piece, as in Steps 9-12.

Step 13 Make 3 lines of double half hitch knots, as per Step 12.

Step 14 To finish, trim the fringe into a V shape, using the main image as a guide, and tie the string to the dowel for hanging.
