Why have one coffee table, when you can have two?
Coffee tables are stock standard within the living room. They’re the perfect place for snacks, books, your WFH equipment, and, you guessed it, a hot cup of coffee.
The trends have circled through the shape, material, and size of these functional decor items. However, the new popular choice for coffee tables now is to have two of them!
With more surface area to display your favourite coffee table books and Better Homes and Gardens magazines, the double coffee table trend is taking off. Having multiple coffee tables not only allows more functionality but also adds visual interest when playing with height and material variations.
Let’s take a closer look at how the double coffee table trend works and how it will best complement your home.
Maximise on space
Multiple coffee tables multiply your surface area. By placing two coffee tables next to each other, especially at differing heights, you can offer up not only additional space for decor but also alternative functionality.
For example, if your household loves putting its feet up on furniture, a shorter coffee table can be reserved for wiggling toes. An adjacent coffee table can then be used for food items, candles, and other needs.
Coffee tables at a higher height can be used for items that should be out of reach of small hands as well, such as lit candles or hot coffee. Having both coffee tables allows for younger children to be in reach of toys, books and snacks when they want, while staying safe from risky objects.
Make a design statement
Whether you’re in a family home or an aesthetic extravaganza, making small changes to your furniture can alter how your room is framed visually.
Coffee tables are often placed in the middle of a living room without any styling in mind. This can cut your room in half spatially. The double coffee table trend means choosing two usually smaller coffee tables than the usual large dresser style. These smaller tables together do not lack in space and continue to add visual interest.
Often circular or rounded, double coffee tables can be in the same style, like in the room above, or two completely different shapes and materials. Having identical coffee tables next to each other establishes a sense of balance and harmony within your room while still adding to that ‘layering effect’.
Coffee tables in varied styles and shapes will need some similarity, but ultimately it’s up to your own design eye to work out what will work best within your lounge space.
