Known for it’s cheap prices and handy hacks, Kmart has become a one-stop shop for practically anything. So when they released a compression sofa that little pops out of the box and assembles itself, it’s easy to see why people were excited.
Priced at $599, the Kmart Trove 3 Seat Compressed Sofa arrives vacuum-packed in a box and expands to full size over 72 hours, reaching a generous 220cm width, which is large enough to seat three adults comfortably.
While the concept is clever, it got us wondering: Is the Kmart compression sofa actually a good buy?
Better Homes and Gardens digital editor Tahni Mesann has tested the sofa in person. “It’s comfy,” she says, “but I wouldn’t use it as a main lounge. It’s more suited to a playroom or a casual space like a garage.”
On Reddit, one commenter added: ” I saw an Instagram video of the Kmart head office unboxing it – it’s VERY low to the ground.”
“My mum has it. It’s comfortable and exactly as pictured,” another person added.
Are compression sofas worth it?
Rebecca Cardamone is an interior decorator and property developer at Ace Property Agency. She says compressed sofas are booming for very practical reasons.
And while we didn’t specifically talk about Kmart’s version, she says compression sofas are, “Cheaper to ship and much easier to deliver to small homes.”
“With renting at an all-time high, people want affordable furniture that works in tight spaces. Plus, they’re perfect for the viral unboxing culture on social media.”
Are compression sofas comfortable?
Rebecca says you can get very comfortable compression sofas, but it depends on the foam quality.
“They can be just as comfortable as traditional sofas, but cheaper foams and frames may compromise long-term support and durability,” says Rebecca.
But she stresses a compression sofa is a “more affordable and short-term solution.”
As for Kmart’s Trove compression sofa, it’s hard to gauge. Despite online scepticism, influencers are saying this sofa is very comfortable (whether they’re being paid or not, we don’t know).
Are there downsides shoppers should know about?
The downside to a compression sofa is that it won’t last forever.
“They’re a smart little buy for apartments and renters, but I’d be recommending traditional sofas to my clients that are wanting a long-term sofa for their home,” says Rebecca.
But if that’s exactly what you’re looking for, Rebecca gives some tips on what to look for.
“Look for high-density foam and solid internal framing. The better the quality, the longer it should last! Again, if you want something that is longer-wearing, I recommend the traditional sofa.”
