IKEA is the place we venture to whenever we need a new storage solution, a funky lamp, or a low-cost, high-quality piece of furniture. In the last few weeks, IKEA has sneakily dropped new rugs on their website, and not said a word about it! After having a chat with IKEA Home Furnishing Specialist Tace Zorad, we’ve deduced which new options are available.

From outdoor rugs, low-maintenance 100% jute to plush low-pile rugs, there’s a range of styles to suit every lifestyle. We’ve enlisted the help of resident BHG stylist, Nonci Nyoni, to give us the lowdown on which rugs from this new collection would work best for families; spills and all!

Nonci is a interiors and props stylist and visual artist with over a decade of magazine industry experience. Following her Behavioural Science and International Relations studies in Melbourne, she launched her career as an interior designer in London. She later shifted her focus to styling before moving back to Australia in 2018. Since then, she has worked for Real Living, Home Life, House and Garden, Home Beautiful and Inside Out. She is now the stylist for Better Homes and Gardens.

Are the IKEA rugs good quality?
There’s a fine line between affordable and quality, and IKEA balances the two with ease. Nonci says that this new rug collection is ideal for families that need a low-maintenance but still luxe-looking rug. She explains that the rugs that are mostly low-pile are the easiest to clean. “The low pile options are great if you’re worried about too much dust collecting and make for easy vacuuming, while the high pile option is great for a cosy soft rug underfoot.”
Tace agrees wholeheartedly, explaining that price is still a huge decider for customers, with the Lohals rugs already becoming a popular option.

Limited edition and special styles
Tace has all the info on the limited edition and special rugs that are now on sale at IKEA.
“Morum is our new outdoor rug superstar, made from hard-wearing polypropylene. It comes in beige, dark green, and dark grey, but we’re most excited about the limited-edition bright orange, which colour-lovers should snap up quickly while it’s here ready for spring and summer entertaining.” If your garden needs a pop of colour, or contrast against all the greenery, then Morum in orange is such a gorgeous pick.

As for new colourways, Tace warns that Stoense’s newest colours, pale pink and pale green, will be snatched up quickly. Ideal for spaces that need calm, like bedrooms or living rooms, this style is low-pile and plush as can be.

IKEA rugs that are worth buying
Nonci’s picks
Adding character is a top priority for Nonci when choosing a rug: “Remember your rug is an accent to add your character to the space and to reflect your style and personality.” When looking at IKEA’s new collection, she loved the variety offered, especially for materials and colour. These were her top three picks from the new collection:
Markblamme

“If you’re looking for a playful and vibrant rug, this is a great affordable option. The colours instantly brighten up an otherwise bland setting and form the perfect platform/foundation on which to build up your room with other pops of colour. Not only does it add colour and character, but also a low-pile soft cushioning for your feet in whatever room you style this in.”
“Another beautiful low-pile and neutral coloured rug option that is very well priced! I love the raised pattern on this rug that resembles the ripples on the sand at the beach, and the neutral colour complements a large variety of furniture and homewares selections.”
“I love that this rug instantly adds both texture and warmth to your space and is a great price for the sizes available. It will immediately add character. Whether you’re going for a rustic country look or a cosier layered aesthetic, this hard-wearing rug is a perfect fit for the modern home.”
A rug makes a room feel like a connected zone, so sizing does matter. Nonci has got rug sizing and spacing down pat, offering up advice for the main rooms of the home:
Living room: Make sure all the front legs of your lounges, sofas and armchairs are able to fit on the rug. In an ideal scenario, the rug is large enough to fit the full living room setting on it (all the furniture legs well placed and spaced on the rug) to make it feel well-considered and cohesive.
Dining room: She recommends having your rug extend at least 60cm past every side of the table so your dining chairs are still on the rug when pulled out. This ensures your chair legs don’t get caught on the rug edge.
Bedroom: The rugshould extend past the edge of the bedside tables on either side of the bed, as well as the bed-end, but does not need to reach up to the bedhead.
Hallway: The rug width should cover at least two-thirds of the hallway width, so it doesn’t look ‘too bitsy’.
Unfortunately, none of the rugs in IKEA’s newest collection is machine washable. However, Tace has some handy advice for spills and stains: “Remember the golden rule: do not rub. Absorb with paper towels, damp with a cloth and use mild detergent. Let the rug dry completely before use. Also vacuum, shake and rotate your outdoor rug regularly. If you need to wash the entire rug, wash by hand with maximum 40 degree water.”
What is the best rug material?
Polypropylene is the most practical choice for most homes. It’s durable, stain-resistant and easy to clean. The MaxFind and La’Grace Home ranges at Bunnings are made from polypropylene and polyester, making them a solid everyday option. Viscose adds a softer, silkier finish but is better suited to lower-traffic areas.
