Three easy ways to ripen tomatoes

Paper bag method

One of the most popular methods only requires two things: a paper bag and a piece of fruit. Place your tomatoes in a paper bag and add an apple or a banana. These fruits naturally release ethylene gas which helps ripen the tomatoes. Fold the bag closed and leave it in a warm spot in your house, such as on a countertop. Be sure to check the tomatoes every couple of days and remove any that are ripe.

Windowsill method

If you don’t want to buy anything extra and rely purely on mother nature, this is the pick for you. Find a sunny windowsill in your home that receives plenty of natural sunlight. Spread the tomatoes out on a plate stem-side down.

Cardboard box method

The cardboard box method is similar to the paper bag one above. Firstly you will need a clean cardboard box. Place your green tomatoes in the box but be sure to spread them out before covering them with a newspaper. This method works by trapping some of the ethylene gas that tomatoes naturally release.
