It’s time to buy Easter chocolates, but with so many options, how do you choose? We took on the mammoth task of trying to taste every single Easter chocolate on the market.
After tasting 65 different eggs, bunnies, pralines and truffles (yes, we were all feeling a bit funky afterwards), we have crowned the best Easter chocolate in Australia. The winner is a classic, but it’s the rest of the top 10 that gave the most interesting results.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- The Better Homes and Gardens team, including senior food editor Sarah Murphy, taste-tested 65 Easter chocolates from Woolworths, ALDI, Coles and gourmet brands to find the very best this Easter season.
- We based our assessments on the following criteria: taste, texture and most on-theme.
- The most divisive Easter chocolate was the KitKat Hot Cross Bun Chocolate, which received the lowest score in our test.
- We have also previously tried and reviewed all the Easter hot cross buns available, with surprising results.
We sourced Australian supermarket brands and gourmet choccies alike, and gathered options from the following brands:
Australian supermarket brands
- Cadbury
- Nestle (Milkybar and KitKat)
- ALDI Dairy Fine
- Darrell Lea
- Lindt
- Ferrero Rocher
- Kinder
Gourmet brands
- Koko Black
- Haigh’s Chocolates
We taste-tested 65 chocolates over two afternoons. Each chocolate was displayed in or next to its packaging. Judging focused on both the taste and texture of the chocolate as well as how eye-catching the packaging was. The whole office joined in on the taste test, with the Better Homes and Gardens team, including senior food editor Sarah Murphy, at the forefront of the judging. We gave each chocolate a score out of 10 and provided anonymous feedback on how we felt about each one.

Which Australian Easter chocolate is the best?
The overall winner – scoring 9.6/10 – went to the classic Cadbury Dairy Milk Hollow Easter Eggs. The tasters described this as the ‘ultimate Easter egg’, with many reminiscing back to egg hunts or getting a box as their gift on Easter Sunday morning. These eggs were smooth, great for easy eating, and the ‘perfect amount of chocolate, without feeling overindulgent afterwards.’
Our testing suggests that for many Aussies, nostalgia and convenience are what matter most when selecting Easter chocolates. That was perhaps best illustrated by our top result. Surprisingly, it wasn’t a beautifully crafted gourmet chocolate (although these chocolates did make the top ten), but instead just a solid supermarket choice.
After Cadbury Dairy Milk Hollow Easter Eggs, our decadent taste shone through, with Haigh’s Chocolate taking out second and third spots, with Haigh’s Milk Speckles Half Egg scoring a 9.3/10 and Haigh’s Milk Chocolate Egg scoring 9.2/10. What can we say? Who doesn’t love Australian-made chocolate with 100s and 1000s all over it?
Taking out the top spot for best value is Aussie icon, Darrell Lea, with their Rocklea Road with Speckled Eggs. It’s sweet as can be, without being too rich. And at $9 (on sale) for a big box, it’s an incredible value-for-money Easter treat you can share with the whole family.

The best overall

01
Cadbury Dairy Milk Hollow Eggs
9.6/10
Hollow eggs took the crown in our taste test – and honestly, no one saw that coming. You put them out for guests knowing they’ll disappear fast. Kids raid them on Easter egg hunts. Those beautiful ombre wrappers catch the light like delicious jewels sitting in a bowl. A chocolate this deeply embedded in our childhoods is a hard thing to beat. Sure, nostalgia might nudge the scores a little, but Cadbury Dairy Milk genuinely delivers, hitting its peak form in this Easter egg.
Price: $12, but it’s currently on sale for $6.90 at Woolworths!
Available at: Woolworths, Coles, Big W

02
Darrell Lea Rocklea Road with Speckled Eggs
7.8/10
With grocery bills climbing, best value matters more than ever at Easter – though let’s be honest, any chocolate in the basket feels like money well spent. However, this decision came down to the judgment of our resident chocolate expert, senior food editor Sarah Murphy. Although her Mum’s rocky road has ‘ruined her for life’ because it’s so good, Darrell Lea is her favourite store-bought option. And the speckled eggs just make it so much more festive.
It’s Dad’s favourite chocolate for Easter, and should definitely be yours too, especially when you look at the price!
Price: $18, but currently on sale for $9 at Big W.
Available at: Darrell Lea, Woolworths, Coles, Big W

03
Haigh’s Milk Speckles Half Egg
9.3/10
It’s also no surprise that Haigh’s Chocolates made the top ten. Their milk chocolate freckles are coveted by many Australians at any time of the year, but this cute half egg is ideal for the Easter season. It is on the pricier side for Easter chocolates; however, it works well for premium Easter gifts to show appreciation and love. Described as ‘the world’s best Easter treat’ and ‘my one true love’ by tasters, it’s easy to see why it came second overall!
Price: $27.50
Available at: Haigh’s Chocolates

04
Haigh’s Milk Chocolate Egg
9.2/10
Haigh’s Milk Chocolate Egg comes in a range of sizes, from this cute 50g all the way to a huge 1kg size. If you need a fancier egg to give to family and friends, this is your best bet. The chocolate taste and texture are what got this egg a score of 9.2/10, it’s just so smooth and creamy!
Our editor, Megan Osborne, is especially fond of these and has worked out that the 500g is the best price per 100g (if you want to get down to the dollars and cents).
Price: from $8.50
Available at: Haigh’s Chocolates

05
Ferrero Rocher Hazelnut Eggs
9/10
Want a step up from the standard supermarket chocolate egg? These chocolate wafer eggs with smooth hazelnut filling are the perfect choice. It was described by one taster as ‘DELIGHTFUL’ (yes, in all caps), while another said they were ‘almost too addictive’. If that doesn’t convince you to go out and buy a pack, we don’t know what will.
Price: $9
Available at: Ferrero Online, Woolworths, Coles, Big W

06
Cadbury Turkish Delight Chocolate Easter Eggs
8.8/10
It may be surprising to some that out of all the filled eggs we tried from Cadbury, Turkish Delight reigned supreme. It’s not too sweet, has enough chocolate to keep it from being sickly and has a great nostalgia factor as well. Most love a sneaky Turkish Delight sweet treat, describing it as a classic choice and ‘the GOAT’ of Easter eggs.
Price: $5.50
Available at: Woolworths, Coles, Big W

07
Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Gift Box
8.8/10
Ah, no chocolate list could be complete without Ferrero Rocher. Although it’s not Easter-themed in any way, this box makes for the easiest gift and is always the go-to for something a tiny bit fancier to gift hosts on Easter Sunday. Everybody loves the whole hazelnut middle and the rich gold packaging!
Price: $32, but currently 50% off at Woolworths.
Available at: Ferrero Online, Woolworths, Coles

08
Cadbury Mini Eggs
8.7/10
Cadbury Mini Eggs are hard to beat for a quick little chocolatey snack. The combination of looking cute and also tasting good makes it the quintessential Easter chocolate for many. The main consensus from the tasting was that the crunch of these eggs is unbeatable.
Price: $7.50
Available at: Coles, Woolworths, Amazon

09
Lindt Gold Hazelnut Easter Bunny
8.6/10
As the only Easter bunny to make the top ten, Lindt has big boots to fill. This Lindt Gold bunny in the Hazelnut flavour was in the ‘top tier’ for most tasters, with many loving the crunch of the nutty chocolate. Lindt is known for their ultra-smooth and rich chocolate, so the added hazelnut made for the perfect balance of flavours.
Price: $12
Available at: Lindt, Woolworths, Coles, Myer, Kmart

10
Ferrero Rocher Cocoa Easter Eggs
8.6/10
Finally, the Ferrero Rocher Cocoa eggs rounded out the winners with a dark chocolate hit. As the only dark chocolate to make the top ten, these eggs were pushed higher for their crispy outer shell and ganache-like filling. It’s just what you want from a small egg, something rich and not too sweet.
Price: $9.30
Available at: Ferrero Online, Woolworths, Coles

How we taste-tested 65 Easter chocolates
We conducted an open-packaging taste test of all the Easter chocolates, keeping the packaging next to the product. This is so Easter festiveness and being on-theme could be judged fairly. Each person who tasted the chocolates had to give them a rating out of ten. Ratings were based on three criteria: taste, texture and level of Easter festivity.
Who were the taste-testers?
We had boxes and boxes of eggs, bunnies and gift boxes, so sharing was definitely required for this taste test! The entire BHG team and wider office were involved in judging.
