Whether you have a baby that’s not completely on solids, an obsession with granola and berries for breakfast or love topping your curries with a blob of yoghurt, it is definitely a staple. But which Greek yoghurt is actually the best – in terms of taste, price and protein?
Looking at the yoghurt aisle at the supermarket, you’re overwhelmed by choice. From home brands to pot sets to Greek-style vs naturally strained, which do you choose? The Better Homes and Gardens team, led by senior food editor Sarah Murphy, thought it would be best to start with taste.
We worked out which supermarket Greek yoghurt had the best flavour, and compared it against price and how much protein it has in each serving. Our blind taste test of Greek yoghurts from Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA left a sour, sweet and tangy taste in our mouths, and lots to think about.

The winner surprised us all, with both the panel and our expert Sarah picking the Woolworths homebrand option. The Woolworths Natural Greek-style yoghurt was crowned the winner because of its creamy, slightly sweet flavour and smooth texture. Our panellists mentioned it would be great for putting on puddings or eating with granola, and is ‘more than just a plate filler’.
Sarah Murphy described this sample as creamy, not too sweet and overall the most solid option on the table. With a low price point of $4.20 for 1kg, it works well for households sticking to a budget. And, we didn’t forget about the protein-addicts! This Greek yoghurt has 10g of protein per serve, the second highest amount in our taste test.

Farmers Union Greek-style All Natural Yoghurt

Panel score: 6.69
Farmers Union Greek-style All Natural Yoghurt came in a close second for the panel. Described as creamy and fresh tasting, this sample was happily consumed by our taste testers. Points were taken off for the ‘sour finish’ that many tasted, but it was considered by everyone as a ‘classic with nothing specifically special about it.’
Sarah enjoyed this option but put it a little further down her ranking for the sour after-taste. With a nice vanilla-like sweetness, she would definitely buy this option in a pinch.

Chobani Greek Yoghurt Natural

Fan favourite Chobani came in third for our Greek yoghurt blind taste test. The thicker texture and mild, pleasant flavour pushed it high up on our ranking. ‘Feels indulgent’ was a standout comment from our panel for how this sample came across in the taste test.
For Sarah, the texture was the highlight of this Greek yoghurt. With a nice and creamy flavour, and no specific dislikes, Chobani came in second place for our resident food expert. Since Chobani is the only option on the list that is a true Greek yoghurt (not Greek-style) and contains the highest amount of protein, it’s no surprise it is so popular.

Lyttos Pot Set Greek Style Yoghurt

Panel score: 5.73
Pot set style yoghurt was not too popular among our taste test panel. However, Aldi’s Lyttos Pot Set Greek Style Yoghurt was ranked well, mainly for its strong flavour profile. Leaning more sour than sweet, this yoghurt was thicker textured without being too heavy. One panellist described it as ‘nice and thick, but still airy’, complimenting the sample’s quality feel.
Sarah liked that it wasn’t as tart as the other pot set options (which were clearly visible by texture), but was not a fan of the thicker texture, adding that she ‘can see how other people prefer it!’

Jalna Pot Set Greek Style Natural Yoghurt

Panel score: 5.53
Jalna, another well-known brand for Greek yoghurt, did not perform as well as other popular options, like Chobani. Sitting in the middle of our ranked list, Jalna Pot Set Greek Style Natural Yoghurt was described as thick with body, not very appealing and ‘a bit like cottage cheese.’
Sarah explained that the texture seemed slightly grainy, and agreed with other panellists that it ‘disintegrates’ as soon as you taste it. The panel ended up divided, with some enjoying the thicker, coarse mouth-feel and others preferring the smoother samples.

‘Mild’ was the repeated characteristic for this sample. Lyttos Greek Style Thick & Creamy Natural Yoghurt was the okay option of the bunch. With ‘nothing special’ listed in both the like and dislike comments of this taste test, nobody had any specific problems with it.
Sarah, on the other hand, really enjoyed this option, putting it in second place in her ranking. She loved the creamy quality, and recommended it for use across both savoury and sweet dishes. With such a low price point, it’s the cheapest product on the list as well.

Coles Pot Set Natural Greek-style Yoghurt

Panel score: 4.39
Our panel deemed the Coles Pot Set yoghurt as too savoury. Sitting at second last place, the only Coles brand option on the list was described as creamy but sour, ‘not as nice’ and having a chunky texture.
Sarah also struggled with this sample, with texture being the main reason for losing points. The standout comment from this sample? ‘Reminds me of chunky custard.’

Tamar Valley Dairy Greek Style Natural Yoghurt

Panel score: 4.23
And right at the bottom is Tamar Valley Dairy with their Greek Style Natural Yoghurt. Unfortunately, taste and texture let them down, with a sour flavour and thin, runny texture. ‘Very watery’ was a repeated phrase among the panellists, while Sarah simply commented ‘It’s a bit too sour for me.’

How we tested the supermarket Greek yoghurts
We blind taste-tested 8 different supermarket Greek yoghurts from Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA. All samples were placed in identical bowls and tasted without any accompaniments.
Samples were numbered from 1 to 8 to avoid bias. Taste-testers shared their responses via an anonymous online form, ranking each Greek yoghurt sample out of ten for four criteria: taste, texture and overall satisfaction. Taste-testers were also encouraged to leave constructive comments on what they liked and disliked about each sample.
How we selected which supermarket Greek yoghurts to test
To be included in our Greek yoghurt taste test, products had to be widely available in supermarkets nationally. This meant choosing the more common brands available in a wide range of stores and the largest size possible to cater for our taste test panel size. All the Greek yoghurts chosen were in stock at the time of purchase.
Two Greek yoghurts that were chosen to be taste tested were out of stock at the time of the taste test: Coles Greek Style Natural Yoghurt and IGA Community Co Greek Style Yoghurt. A Coles spokesperson commented that supply issues of different Greek yoghurts (including the Coles Greek Style Natural Yoghurt) are not supermarket-specific but instead an industry-wide trend due to the popularity of healthy protein sources.
Chobani had the highest amount of protein, with 13.8g per serve. Woolworths Natural Greek style yoghurt came in second, with 10g of protein.
