Which is the best supermarket Anzac biscuit? We tasted them all

Nothing beats homemade, but the winner is your next best option.

For those who don’t bake their own Anzac biscuits, buying from the supermarket is your next best bet. We decided to put all the brands to the test, finding bikkies from Coles, Woolworths and IGA to see which is the overall best supermarket Anzac biscuit. We blind tasted 8 different options, including a gluten-free and dairy-free Anzac biscuit, to find the most delicious.

The verdict

The winner from our panel of 15 office taste testers was Woolworths Bakery Anzac Biscuit Family Pack, which was loved for it’s chewy texture. The highest score from our expert Sarah Murphy was Irrewarra Bakery Australia’s Finest Anzac Biscuits, because of the crisp texture and rich flavour.

Our methodology for tasting Anzac biscuits

We blind tasted 8 different Anzac biscuits – 7 from various Australian supermarkets, and 1 homemade version. The homemade version was our control for this taste test, acting as the ideal biscuit for the other options to hopefully reach. Unsurprisingly, our control was by far the winner, with an 8.9/10 – as digital editor Tahni says “nothing beats a homemade biscuit.”

This is what our blind taste-test looked like – it’s hard to tell which is which!

We conducted our Anzac biscuit taste test as a blind test, putting each biscuit on a plate and numbering them from 1 to 8. Number 1 was our control (homemade), and the rest were in no particular order. Number 5 was the gluten-free and dairy-free option.

Our tasting panel was made up of 15 tasters, with various ages involved (our range was between 18 and 65). BHG senior food editor Sarah Murphy also put each biscuit to the test as an independent taste tester.

Our judging criteria for the best Anzac biscuit

Anzac biscuits are a surprisingly tricky product to taste test. The recipe — a combination of flour, rolled oats, sugar, coconut, butter, bi-carb soda and golden syrup — is legally protected, meaning every biscuit on the shelf should theoretically taste the same. In practice, that’s not quite how it plays out.

To keep our judging consistent and objective, each taste tester ranked every biscuit from 1–10 across four criteria: appearance, taste, texture and overall enjoyment. Our benchmarks were based on the judging criteria used in country show baking competitions, where a perfect Anzac biscuit is defined as deep golden in colour, even in size and shape, between 4–5cm in diameter, and chewy in the centre with enough structure to snap when broken.

After averaging scores from appearance, taste, texture and overall enjoyment, we have an overall score for our panel testers, and a separate overall score from our food expert, senior food editor Sarah Murphy.

How we chose which Anzac biscuits to taste

We researched the main supermarkets in Australia – Coles, Woolworths, IGA and ALDI, and found all the Anzac biscuits on offer. Many brands overlapped between stores, and there were very limited options for GF and DF biscuits. In the end, we chose 7 that we were able to get our hands on, including one gluten-free and dairy-free brand from IGA.

Here are all the bikkies in their packets, including our control fresh out of the oven (bottom left).

Our control biscuit

Sarah Murphy’s homemade Anzac biscuits

Panel score: 8.9/10

Our senior food editor, Sarah Murphy, knows her stuff when it comes to making Anzac biscuits. Our panel gave an overall score of 8.9/10 for this delicious bikkie. According to the panel, it was ‘definitely made with love’ and ‘the perfect balance of texture and taste.’

Sarah knew which one the control was in this test (she made them!), so her score was obviously a 10/10. Needless to say, nothing is better than a homemade biscuit, especially when you use Sarah’s classic recipe.

Panel winner

Woolworths Bakery Anzac Biscuit Family Pack

Expert score: 5.75/10

Panel score: 7.2 /10

The Woolworths Bakery Anzac Biscuit came out on top for our testing panel, with a generous score of 7.2/10. Since 80% of our tasters enjoy a chewy cookie, it’s no surprise that this one is the winner. Comments about the texture include ‘extremely chewy’ and ‘the perfect amount of bite.’

Tasting expert Sarah Murphy had a slightly different score, giving it a 5.75/10. The downfall for her was in the appearance of the biscuit, which got a score of 4/10. While Sarah said that there was a good chewy taste and a genuine traditional Anzac flavour, the pale colouring and lack of butteriness gave it a lower score.

Irrewarra Bakery Australia’s Finest Anzac Biscuits

Expert score: 7.75/10

Panel score: 4.2/10

Irrewarra Bakery was very divisive among the panel. While it scored lower in appearance for almost everyone, the taste, texture and overall enjoyment were hotly contested among the 15 tasters.

Some, including Sarah, loved the brandy snap flavour and crunch of the biscuit. But everyone who preferred a chewy bikkie over a crunchy one made the panel score much lower in the end.

The rest of the supermarket Anzac biscuits, ranked

Wondering how the rest of the pack fared? Each biscuit received a score from Sarah and our tasting panel, which were averaged to produce the final ranking. Here’s how they placed, from #2 onwards.

02

IGA Bakery Anzac Biscuits 6 pack

Overall score: 6.3/10

If extremely rich and indulgent is your vibe for Anzac biscuits, then IGA Bakery has got the perfect bikkie for you. Our panel had varying opinions when taste-testing this one, with comments like ‘tastes very heavily of butter’ and ‘really caramelly’.

Sarah didn’t think the overwhelming caramelisation was close to the traditional Anzac biscuit, and scored accordingly. While appearance scored highly for her, the cake-like texture and heavy-handed butteriness were not enjoyed.

03

Fresh Bake Anzac Biscuits

Overall score: 5.9/10

The Fresh Bake Anzac biscuits from IGA are mid-tier to our tasting panel. Described as an average biscuit that ‘works well in a pinch’ you wouldn’t mind if this were the only option, but there are so many better brands out there.

Sarah didn’t think this biscuit matched an Anzac biscuit accurately. The taste and texture was more reminscent of a butter biscuit, a sentiment that was echoed by our panel.

04

Unibic Anzac Biscuits

Overall score: 5.1/10

Taking out 5th place is the traditional supermarket Anzac biscuit that most are familiar with. A lower panel score came down to the crunchy vs chewy debate, as many didn’t love the snap of this biscuit.

Sarah, on the other hand, thought it had a good Anzac profile, but did admit it was clearly store-bought. She would recommend this as a good quality, low-cost store-bought option.

Available at: Woolworths, Coles and IGA

05

Phillippa’s Bakery Anzac Biscuits

Overall score: 4.25/10

The downfall of Phillippa’s Bakery Anzac Biscuits comes down to the texture. The very crispy, dry quality of this bikkie was what brought the panel score down.

Sarah said the caramelisation was a bit too heavy-handed for this biscuit. While she agreed it was tasty and moreish, it was not truly an Anzac flavouring.

Price: $16.50

Available at: IGA

06

Leda Bakery Anzac Biscuits

Overall score: 1.9/10

Finally, is it any surprise that the gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free option came in last place? While we did highlight that this was a biscuit for those with dietary requirements, many were still surprised at the flavour of this one.

It was expected that the texture would be slightly amiss due to key binding ingredients being substituted, but it was the flavour that was ‘too floury’ and ‘just unpleasant’ that caught our panel off guard.
