Waffles are usually a dish that are left for cafes and restaurants to make. Recreating them at home means either buying a bulky waffle machine, or toasting the frozen kind.

But, there’s a new invention on the market! Similar to the viral Kmart toastie machine, the Joie waffle maker will cook your waffles in the microwave. You can have your sweet breakfast or dessert cooked in under 10 minutes. Our food editor, Sarah Murphy, put her favourite toppings – fresh berries and lots of icecream – but you can add anything you desire!

Ingredients

Method

Step 1

In a bowl combine flour, sugar and powder. Whisk to combine. Add milk, egg and oil, whisk until a smooth batter forms.

Step 2

Following product directions lightly grease the microwave waffle maker. Dollop 4 Tbsp of batter onto one side of waffle plate and use the back of a spoon to spread to level. Top with remaining waffle plate and seal. Microwave following product directions (see note). Repeat twice more to make 3 waffles in total.

Step 3

Stack waffles, dust with icing sugar, then top with ice-cream, blueberries and drizzle with maple syrup.

Cook’s tips

  • The Aldi microwave specified to cook waffles for 1 minute 45 seconds, to turn and cook another 1 minute 45 seconds. Your microwave may need slightly more, depending on its power. We found that we need 2 minutes each side for light golden waffles.
  • The plates were very hot when you remove the product from the microwave so ensure you use gloves and can transfer it easily to a safe surface (away from little hands) until it cools.· We didn’t achieve a dark golden crust on our waffles using the microwave waffle maker, but they were still delicious anyway!
  • The microwave waffle maker isn’t suitable if you’re making large amounts of waffles, as it would be too time-consuming doing them one by one. However it’s a fun addition for single-serve cooking, and it’s small size means it stores easily.
