The verdict isn't what you'd expect!

The impressive $15 Kmart microwave toastie maker is one of the most sought-after products from their new August range. It received so much love online that it flew off the shelves, meaning many missed out on securing one for themselves.

After waiting for their anticipated return, the microwave toastie makers are finally back in stock at Target and Kmart.

Everyone who loves a good ol’ toasted sandwich: ham and cheese, tuna melts, chicken and mayo… no longer require a heavy toasted sandwich press because they’re just as good, if not better with this easy appliance.

If your first thought was “No, absolutely not”, we know. We were right there with you, asking, won’t the bread go soggy? How will it crisp up? Will it taste nice?

So, our food editor, Sarah Murphy tried it.

Surprisingly, it actually works. Brilliantly. The bread was crispy and golden, the cheese oozy and delicious… it tasted the same as an ordinary toasted sandwich – you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

The best part is it’s so easy to use! You butter the bread, fill it with your ingredients, place it in the maker, pop it into the microwave, flip it halfway, and you have a delicious toastie.

“Crispy factor was next level,” Sarah said. “I was unsure if it would give the super crunchy taste we love toasties for and was very pleasantly surprised at the crunch factor.”

However, getting the crunch factor took a few tests to perfect.

“It may take a few goes until you find the perfect cooking time for your microwave – but all your experiments will still be delicious. We started with 3 minutes on an 800W microwave, and found that 3.5  minutes, turning the toastie halfway through cooking time, gave us a lovely rich golden crispy crust. 3 minutes also gave us a great crust, just slightly lighter in colour.”

Sarah also tested different types of bread to see what worked best, and the maker proved to be versatile. “The toastie plates are generous in size and can fit slices of larger loaves of bread easily.”

The non-stick coated plates mean no dried-up ingredients to scrub off, you just rinse it off with warm, soapy water.

Plus, the cleanup was quick, and it’s even dishwasher-friendly.

“We had some melty cheese overflow onto the plates and they cleaned incredibly easily, much easier than trying to clean a jaffle maker or sandwich press.”

It has a soft silicone outer case for safe handling, however, you should still be careful.

“The non-stick plates are extremely hot when you take them out of the microwave and take a while to cool down, so make sure kids are supervised when using it. Removing and putting the plates back into the silicone outer is a little fiddly, but after a few goes you’ll get the hang of it.”
