This 30-minute bolognese pie for one is the cosy dinner you’ll make on repeat

Rich, hearty and ready in around 30 minutes, this bolognese pie with gnocchi top is the perfect solution for busy weeknights. Designed as a recipe for one, it delivers all the comforting flavours of a classic family pie without the leftovers. With a savoury bolognese base and soft, golden gnocchi topping, it’s a quick, satisfying meal that’s big on flavour and light on effort.

Step 1

Cook gnocchi according to the packet directions. Drain.

Step 2

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a medium frying pan on high heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until soft. Add beef. Cook for 5 minutes or until browned, stirring to break up any lumps in the mince.

Step 3

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 30 seconds. Add tomatoes, Italian herbs and water. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium. Season. Add vegetables and simmer uncovered for 2 minutes or until thickened slightly. Transfer to a wide, shallow 1 1/2-cup capacity ovenproof pan.

Step 4

Preheat grill to high heat. Toss gnocchi with cheese and sprinkle over the Bolognese. Grill for 3–5 minutes, until the cheese melts and is golden. Serve with a mixed salad.
