It’s a rare individual who has never snuck a few extra kilos into their carry-on luggage to save themselves some cash on checked luggage fees, however budget airline Tigerair Australia is cracking down on the over-packers and making excess cabin baggage history.
Tigerair is trialling a new check-in process that uses a tag system to ensure all passengers’ cabin bags have been weighed, size-checked and approved for boarding, then a stamped and dated approval tag is attached to the bag. A bag with no tag means it hasn’t been checked.
The change has been in place for the past month at Sydney, Brisbane and Gold Coast airports, and Tigerair plan to have the same tagging process in place for all flights by the end of 2018.
The trial aims to ensure all passengers’ cabin baggage falls within the size and weight limits, and reduce the frustrating issue of over-filled overhead lockers.
The current cabin baggage limit for Tigerair is 7kg per customer, and there is the option of upgrading to cabin+, which allows up to 12kg of cabin baggage that can either be pre-purchased or purchased at airport check-in.
Over-packers beware.
