Rome is one of the most iconic tourist destinations in the world. From the colosseum to the Vatican and the Spanish Steps, the Italian capital is a cosmopolitan city rich in history and culture. However, it appears the authorities in the city are getting sick of tourists causing congestion at iconic landmarks by sitting down.
In July this year, Roman officials announced new rules and fines for those who soil, deface or damage historic, artistic and monumental sites within the city. One of those new sanctions includes fining tourists for sitting on the famous Spanish Steps.
The 18th century historic monument is a UNESCO-protected site that recently underwent major restorations, and those found to be sitting or laying on the steps could be slapped with a fine ranging from 250€ to 400€, which is roughly AUD$400-$650.
The new rules came into effect in July 2019, and since then those who show intent to sit down in the area will be warned off the action by officials with whistles.
So, if you happen to be planning a trip to Rome and want to picnic somewhere beautiful, we suggest avoiding taking a seat on or near any of Rome’s many iconic landmarks. Instead, pick a locations from the list of picnic-friendly locations in Rome below.
