Qantas and Jetstar have announced that they plan to be the first airlines to go completely paperless and replace all paper boarding passes with an entirely digital system this year in an attempt to cut down the amount of paper waste produced by the airlines.
The change was announced on February 20, and Qantas explained that they are aiming to become the first airline in the world to reuse, recycle and compost at least 75 per cent of its waste by the end of 2021.
The airlines are also planning to replace single-use plastics with alternative packaging, coffee cups will be recycled or composted and excess food will be donated or composted as a part of other eco-friendly changes the airlines are planning to make this year.
Boarding passes and operational manuals will be made digital and the changes will come into effect on Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar flight.
The airline is also planning to find sustainable alternatives for their single-use plastic items such as cups, cutlery and headset covers.
It’s a win for the environment.
