An airport is one of the more unpleasant locations to spend an extended amount of time in during Christmas. It’s boring, the seats are uncomfortable and the food options are generally limited. However, one European airport has gone the extra mile to ensure passengers enjoy every minute of their visit during December this year.
Munich Airport in Germany takes their Christmas spirit seriously, and has transformed it’s halls into a life-size winter wonderland to celebrate the festive season.
The airport is currently hosting its annual Wintermarkt, a festive Christmas market made up of 44 stalls selling all things merry and bright, such as local crafts, mulled wine, roasted nuts and bratwurst. At the centre of the market stands an impressive Christmas tree that towers over the entire display, reaching a whopping 50 feet and decorated with more than 5000 lights. Surrounding the market is a forest of 500 real pine trees that not only spread the scent of Christmas throughout the transit hub, but allows little tackers to wander what can only be described as a whimsical escape within the walls of an otherwise ordinary airport.
In case that isn’t festive enough for you, Munich Airport also has two ice-skating rinks, one for the general public to enjoy, and one dedicated to showcasing the Bavarian ice sport called eisstockschießen. The Airport also boasts an alpine-themed restaurant where you can enjoy a meal from the comfort of a ski-lift gondola.
The market will be active from now until December 26, and can be visited by anyone in the area, not just passengers, as it is located outside the security and boarding gate areas, and is open daily from 11am to 9pm, 5pm on Christmas eve.
