When you think of Australia’s Red Centre, a few iconic Australian locations spring to mind, such as Alice Springs, Uluru and Kata Tjuta. However, there’s one other forgotten gem that deserves a mention – and a spot on your itinerary.
Kings Canyon is a mountainous gorge that rises 270 metres above sea level and is located in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre, just a three-hour drive from Uluru and Alice Springs. You won’t see anywhere near the amount of tourists here that you might at Uluru, but the landscape is just as mesmerising.
Kings Canyon is part of Watarrka National Park in the southwestern corner of the Norther Territory, and is accessed via the Stuart or Lasseter Highways. Once there, you can hike the iconic Kings Canyon Rim Walk which will give you a breath-taking view of the gorge and landscape below. There are options to suit both novice and experienced hikers – but you’ll need to get there early to beat the heat.
Another unique location within Kings Canyon is the Garden of Eden, a permanent waterhole with lush greenery and shade that stands out in stark contrast to the orange rock formations around it. Thanks to the nearby Kings Creek Station, you can also experience the location with a quad bike or helicopter tour.
There are even camping, glamping and safari cabins nearby for an accommodation experience you won’t forget. Kings Canyon is still relatively unknown to tourists, so it’s unlikely you’ll run into the large crowds seen at Uluru, but the sights are just as beautiful. Don’t believe us?
