We recently reported that the humble cassette tape is now being sold online to collectors for crazy prices of up to $1500. It appears that our obsessions with all things old, nostalgic and retro has really come to peak, and the Sony Walkman is also now making a comeback.
To celebrate the 40th birthday of the original Sony Walkman, Sony have released an anniversary edition of the iconic portable cassette player. Unfortunately, this version has had a tech upgrade, so you won’t actually be able to play your old Fleetwood Mac tapes on it. The limited edition anniversary Walkman will also cost you almost three times as much as the original did back in the ‘70s.
The 40th Anniversary Sony Walkman is actually an android-powered music player that can store up to 16GB of music. It can connect to wi-fi and Bluetooth and use Android apps on the 3.6 inch touchscreen. You can connect wireless headphones to the device, but there’s also a headphone jack if you’re looking to go full retro. The device even has a screensaver that looks like a cassette player.
And – drumroll please – this piece of memorabilia can be yours for the price of $599, and is available in December.
