It wasn’t so long ago that many of us turfed our VHS collections out with the trash in favour of high-definition DVDs that didn’t require rewinding after watching. However, it appears that, just as records are enjoying a major renaissance, VHS tapes are having their second moment in the spotlight.
We’ve reached out to collectibles expert Alaister Low, eBay Australia’s Head of Sneakers, Collectibles and Growth for insight into the world of collecting valuable VHS tapes.
Alaister describes collecting as an interest that ‘brings a lot of joy around belonging to a community and connecting with something meaningful.’
He explains that VHS tapes were an important part of many individual’s childhoods, making them a nostalgic product that can become very valuable to some. So, have you uncovered an old box of VHS tapes during your spring cleaning efforts?
If you think your VHS tapes could get you an extra bit of cash, here’s Alaister’s advice:
Valuable VHS tapes to look out for
According to Alaister, the two biggest determining factors for high-value VHS tapes are demand and rarity.
“Look for originals, limited edition and anniversary sets if you want to fetch big bucks. On eBay, a 1988 VHS of the cult classic Fright Night Part 2 with a coffin-shaped cover sold for just under $770 last year.”
In 2019, there were record sales of collectible VHS tapes worldwide, with most of the top sales going to Disney movies. This includes the sale of a Mulan 1999 Special Edition, which sold for $21,111.
Alaister explains that on eBay this year, there’s been a 35% increase in sales of Disney VHS’, along with a 25% increase in Shrek and a 50% increase in the 80’s classic The Goonies. It’s definitely all about the nostalgia!
If you want to know whether the content of your VHS tape is worthy of collectible, Alaister suggests to jump straight onto eBay and search the title. Looking up the asking price across several listings can help give you the right indication of the tape’s value, and demand.
Look over your tapes for flaws and imperfections
It’s no surprise that collectors are looking for items that are mint-condition, or as close as they can get to perfect. Alaister explains that for VHS tapes specifically, any damage to the cover or tape itself will decrease desirability. The following flaws could decrease sale value:
- Broken cassette case
- Torn or wrinkled tape
- Demagnetisation
- Water/mould damage
Think about your buyer
As Alaister says, ‘Every collector is different.’ There will be no one that’s looking for the same thing. Some people are looking for VHS tapes for nostalgia, and being able to re-watch their favourite movies.
Others are interested in display, and creating a retro feel in their home. “Retro styles including the eighties and nineties have been popular interior trends and VHS are a great throwback item to add to evocative home decor.”
It’s essential to think about the end journey of your VHS tape. If you’ve got a VHS tape that you think is worth selling, where will it end up? Will it be placed on display in a styled 90’s living room, or will it be put straight into a VHS player to be watched over and over again?
Speaking of VHS tapes, Alaister explains that the market for VHS players is just as popular: “A quick search on eBay will generate plenty of listings for VHS players across various price points and conditions. On eBay, a National 1985 VHS player, brand new and in its original box sold for over $1,600 but there are many at affordable prices too!”
