5 great tips for taking your kids skiing

Introduce your kids to snow sports!

Ski season is officially upon us, and taking your kids to the snow is one of the most fun holiday experiences you can have as a family. Here are some top tips to help you make the most out of your skiing holiday.

1. Choose your resort wisely

“When choosing a resort, we recommend first timers consider the size, terrain and facilities it offers, as well as affordability and accessibility,” says Sally Brook, Acting General Manager at Mt Baw Baw Alpine Village. “Skiing and boarding isn’t for everyone, so look for somewhere that offers alternatives such as tobogganing and snow play.”

2. Shop around for great deals.

“If you are able to attend the resort during the week a lot of places offer mid-week deals,” Sally says. “Avoiding school holiday and peak times will also keep the cost down.”

3. Rent before buying

“Buying your own snow gear is a big investment, so you want to be sure you love snow sports before committing,” Sally says. “In the meantime, pretty much everything can be rented, including goggles and helmets.” The only things you really need to buy are your own thermal base layer and gloves.

4. Book in for lessons

“We recommend taking at least one day of lessons at the start, which will introduce you to your equipment and teach you the basics you need to safely navigate the beginner slopes,” says Nicole Robins, Snowsports instructor at Mt Baw Baw Alpine Village. “To avoid disappointment call to schedule your lessons as far in advance as possible, because we do often sell out of spaces – especially on weekends and during school holidays!”

5. Tell your kids what to expect

“Talk to your kids about what to expect for their first day skiing. Make sure they know they will be outside all day, that it might be cold, and that their clothing and boots that will be new to them,” Nicole says. “If you have your own ski boots, it can help to have kids try them on at home and wear them around the house so they get used to the feeling beforehand.”
