Kmart and Target have issued an urgent national recall of their Pop and Surprise Playset after identifying a major safety defect that poses a ‘risk of serious injury or death by choking’.
According to the recall notice, the toy does not meet the mandatory Australian safety standards for products intended for children up to and including 36 months of age.
This issue centres around small screws within the toy that may loosen or detach during normal use. If these components separate from the playset during play, they can present a significant choking hazard.
Authorities have confirmed that “incidents have already occurred,” prompting swift action from both retailers.
The Pop and Surprise Playset has been sold across Australia in recent months, and while the recall affects a specific manufacturing batch, parents and caregivers are being urged to check their toys immediately.
The recall applies only to batch 20/25, manufactured in Vietnam. The affected Kmart products can be identified by code 42821427, while the Target version is identified by the code 69576577. These codes are printed on the underside of the toy, making them easy to locate for anyone unsure whether their product is included.

What to do if you have the product
Consumers who own the toy are advised to stop using it straight away, even if it appears to be in good condition as the risk exists across the entire batch. Customers can return the toy to the store they purchased it from for a full refund and no receipt is required.
If you are unable to visit a store, contact the retailer’s customer service team for further instructions. The recall notice also asks anyone who has sold or given the toy to another family to pass on the information as soon as possible, ensuring the product can be removed from use.
