It’s that time of year again when the weather starts to warm up, and you feel like cleaning everything.
Before you get your spring cleaning checklist together, there’s something else you need to do: clean your cleaning products.
How to clean your cleaning tools
That’s right, your mop, broom, vacuum and cleaning cloths – it turns out you should be cleaning them more than you think.
Here’s how to clean the most common household cleaning tools.
How to clean your vacuum cleaner
So, your vacuum cleaner is actually disgusting. But when it comes to deep cleaning your vacuum, it’s essential to read the manufacturer’s instructions, so you don’t break it.
If you’re in the mood for some cleaning, you can check the vacuum roller after a few uses and remove the hair that is wrapped around it, and wipe down the surfaces.
But every 12 to 18 months, you should think about deep cleaning your vacuum. While this might seem like a time-consuming task, cleaning and rinsing the filters will make a huge difference when it comes to the performance of your vacuum.
Cleaning cloths, dish cloths etc
Cleaning cloths should be cleaned with hot water after use and left to dry thoroughly. Over time dirt, germs and bacteria can build up, and your cloths need to be deep cleaned.
Cleaning expert Nicole Gibson from Soka Australia says on Instagram to pre-soak your cloths and tea towel in hot water for 30 minutes. Nicole likes to use Norwex Microfiber Cleaner Laundry Booster, but dishwashing detergent will also work.
After soaking, wash on a regular cycle.
How to clean your mop
Your mop must be cleaned after each use to ensure bacteria don’t fester.
For a mop that isn’t machine washable, rinse the mop thoroughly after each use. Create a mixture of water, vinegar and dishwashing detergent (1 cup of vinegar and a squirt of detergent) in a clean bucket to cover the mop head for 30 minutes. Put the mop in the sun to dry completely.
As for your mop pads, Nicole recommends on Instagram to give them pre-soak every few uses. Spray them with a combination of dishwashing detergent and water before soaking (1tbs detergent per cup of water). Then wash them on a regular cycle in your washing machine.
How to clean your broom
Your broom is another item that needs to be cleaned after each use, but who has time for that? We think every now and then is probably fine as long as they are not getting wet.
To clean your broom, take it outside with a dustbin and give it a good bang to eliminate dirt and debris. You could also try and vacuum your broom if that’s not too fiddly. Next, make up a solution of 1 cup of vinegar with a squirt of dish soap in warm water and leave your broom to soak for 30 minutes. Once the time is up, give it a rinse and leave it in the sun to dry completely.
