Ah, spring. It’s the time of year we all eagerly wait for. The days edge longer, brighter, and happier, and the smell of new blooms and freshly cut lawns fill the air. We start to open our windows, our doors, our homes and let the sunlight in — and the dust-out, as we prepare for our annual spring clean.
The best bit? You don’t have to spend a motza to refresh your home, bring your garden back to life and style up your home with on-trend new pieces. The Reject Shop have a range of high-quality products from some of Australia’s most trusted brands, all at affordable prices, that can do the job in one shop.
Here, our list of cleaning updates to prioritise and help you get your home to ‘house proud status’ this spring.
1. Refresh your bedding
Use spring as a springboard to better sleep. First up, rotate your mattress to avoid body weight impressions (and flip if the mattress style allows).
Next, wash your sheets and mattress protector in hot water and an antibacterial soak to kill dust mites and bacteria. If your pillows and duvet are machine washable, ‘repeat and rinse’ (check the care instructions). If not, some bedding allows dry cleaning but if both options are not, well, an option, then spot clean with a fabric cleaner and air in direct sunlight.
Now the pretty part – new bedding! Spring is the perfect time to pack away heavy flannelettes, darker colours and replace them with a pop of colour. Think linen and cotton sheets, lighter fabric throws and decorative cushions and pretty spring-esque patterns.
Make sure you vacuum around and underneath the bed, and along windowsills to reduce dust and buildup.
2. Brighten up your garden
Spring is the time of blooming colour, but it’s also a time of weeds. First up, make sure you’re wearing gardening gloves to avoid splinters and any chemical or fertiliser transfer onto your hands. You can pull weeds out manually, but you need to get the whole root and bulb. Alternatively, try a weed killer – and have some handy good quality gardening tools in your arsenal.
Spring is also pruning season — bushes, roses, trees, and hedges. It’s also the time to start planting seeds. Think herbs, fruit, and leafy greens — and of course, flowers. Carrots are better planted in late spring. A seedling planter box is great for transporting in and out of direct sunlight, rain, and weather hazards, then you can transfer your seedlings to a larger pot or bed when they’re more robust.
And the fun part, of course, is bringing your garden to life. Don’t let the action stop as the sun goes down —add some solar spotlights, stakes, strip lights or fairy lights to bring the blooms to life. A bird bath will attract different species to your garden, and you can enjoy the view from your very own sanctuary – a lovely outdoor table and chair setting, your favourite tea and the sound of nature.
3. Pimp your pantry
If your pantry surface is sprinkled with flour/oats/spices (and who knows what else) that have leaked from their boxes, it’s time for a clean. We love microfibre cloths for trapped dust in corners, and they’re super absorbent and machine washable. For stubborn grit and stains, a multi-purpose surface cleaner should lift grime. Let surfaces fully dry before restocking.
Tip: There’s a great range of fridge, shoe and wardrobe storage solutions at The Reject Shop to organise every nook and cranny of your home. To avoid future issues, transparent air-tight storage containers will not only keep contents fresher for longer but prevent spills, keep weevils out, keep your pantry organised and look smart!
4. Liven up your home
Spring is all about new beginnings, and home décor is a simple way to inject new life, mood, and colour into your spaces. Brighten up your family meals with quality dinnerware, mugs and teacups that are as decorative as they are practical — and will make you smile every time you take a sip. New on-trend decorative elements such as the flora and fauna trend will instantly update your spaces without costing a packet.
