For many women the morning and evening routine of cleansers, seriums, lotions and potions can be an exhausting one. Throw some makeup application into the mix (if you like wearing makeup) and it makes what should be a quick job seem like a marathon. Everyone is busy and time-poor these days, so make a little extra time for doing things you enjoy by streamlining and simplifying the necessities.
Dr Giulia D’Anna is the founder of Dermal Distinction, a premier skin clinic in Balwyn, Victoria. Giulia has put together a guide for simplifying and streamlining your beauty routine.
1. Always cleanse
“Clean skin is always in. I think most people recognise the need to wash your face every morning and night but using a good quality cleanser can really change your skin for the better. Cleansers remove environmental debris, dead skin cells, makeup and other contaminants. When looking for a cleanser I recommend buying one that is pH-balanced and non-foaming. This means that it’s not harsh on the skin, and doesn’t compromise the skin barrier.”
2. Keep to the basics
“Skin care is important because healthy skin will save you time when applying makeup and the anti-ageing results will pay off big time later in life. When your skin looks and feels healthy, there is very little need to apply heavy duty foundation, cutting down on makeup application.”
“If I had to cut everything away and just keep one or two basics I would include a morning application of a Vitamin C serum and a retinol based product at night time. Vitamin C helps to brighten the skin, prevent pigmentation and is the building block of collagen. Aspect Dr Active C Serum. At night, swap this out for a retinol product. Vitamin A, or retinol, really helps to lift away dead skin cells gently over-night. I personally love and use Cosmedix Refine everyday.”
2. Use multi-tasking products
“Use a single product that serves more than one purpose. Right now, for me, that is sunscreen being combined with other products, such as foundations, moisturisers and eye serums.”
“Look for a ‘physical’ sunscreen as they sit on the skin and bounce sun rays right off. Look for the ingredients Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide on the ingredients list. They are non-irritating and work efficiently at deflecting UV. Just remember that this will not be enough sun protection if you are going to be outdoors or swimming. Slip, slop and slap more sun protection for concentrated outdoor time.”
“For makeup, choose products that can be built up for more or less coverage, a makeup palette that covers eyes and face, etc.”
4. Consider a lash lift
“Long lashes with lift and volume are easier to get than you think, and they require very little maintenance. Better Yet, you won’t need mascara anymore. The process takes around 45 minutes a lash lift and tint lasts for around 8 weeks. No mascara. No curler. Just curled, dark lashes from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed.”
