For all you ladies who look after your skin daily, cheers to you. For all our sisters who don’t here’s a little reminder of how and why you should use skin care.
Back to basics
Your face is your calling card, it’s unique and it deserves TLC. And the better it looks the better you feel. So every woman, regardless of your age should look after your skin and it doesn’t need to break the budget.
Basically, to be healthy and strong your skin needs to be cleansed and protected from the elements. And the simple answer to keeping it that way, especially on your face, is to be consistent. So if you think you’re too busy, or it’s too late, think again. The number of wrinkles you have doesn’t determine whether your skin can look lovely or not. It’s the condition of your skin and that’s largely up to you.
The rules:
#1 Avoid using hot water
If you’re addicted to the sensation of hot water on your face, and body for that matter, stop now. Your skin will thank you for switching to warm water. That tight, squeaky-clean feeling you thought was a sign of well washed skin is actually an indication it’s been stripped of its natural protective barrier. This is not good.
And in case you’re still not convinced, if you continue to use hot water you’re likely to develop redness, broken capillaries, open pores, surface dehydration, lines, and a shine down your t-zone whenever you’re warm. Is it time to turn down the heat?
How to cleanse
In the morning
Refresh your face with a splash of lukewarm water. Using a cleanser isn’t necessary as your skin isn’t ‘dirty’.
In the evening
Cleansing at night is most important as throughout the day, whether you wear makeup or not, your skin will have been exposed to irritants and skin damaging dirt and pollution.
What to use
Cleansing milk: Use if your skin is dry or normal. Massage over damp skin then wipe off with a face washer, muslin cloth or simply rinse off with water.
Foaming cleanser: Use if your skin is oily or a combination of oily and dry. If you’ve been a soap lover you may prefer this option.
Miscellar water: Can be used for all skin types. It works by lifting off the dirt and makeup and comes in the form of wipes or liquid, in which case you use with cotton pads.
#2 Apply moisturiser daily
No matter how old or young you are or how many wrinkles you have your skin will look and feel a whole lot better if you treat it to a softening and soothing cream or face oil morning and night. Consider it feeding your skin and dressing it for the conditions.
If you haven’t been doing this as a rule you’ve probably forgotten how relaxed and comfy your skin can feel when it’s loved. And that’s what it is, taking care of your skin is loving yourself and believing you’re worth it, which of course you are.
What to use
In the morning
If you’re heading out shopping, driving, sitting on a bus or in a coffee shop you still need to apply a day cream with an SPF15 or more. If you’re going to be outdoors for any length of time, such as walking, gardening, picnicking or sitting on the beach, use a sunscreen with SPF 50.
If you’re having an at home day apply a moisturiser or nourishing oil suited to your skin.
In the evening
After cleansing your skin apply a nourishing cream. Go for whatever suits your budget, but rest assured even the most affordable product in the super market will serve your skin well.
For added benefits, first apply a serum or a face oil loaded with anti-oxidants to help rejuvenate and strengthen your skin.
