It’s been dubbed a superhero of the herbal community, but what exactly is Fire Cider and how do you make it?

Although the recipe can be adapted to suit your taste buds, the original ingredients include combining fresh horseradish, ginger, garlic, onions, and cayenne pepper in apple-cider vinegar for three to four weeks before drinking.

Speaking to Better Homes and Gardens, Andrew Hamilton, from the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia, said a tea spoon of Fire Cider could help fight cold-like symptoms, among other things.

“Fire Cider is Anti-microbial (i.e. kills bacteria), stimulates circulation within the circulatory system, is good for sinusitis and a blocked nose. It also aides general digestion, can be used as a mild blood thinner and for cleansing of the skin,” said Andrew.

As for the dosage, Andrew says to take 1 teaspoon up to two times a day, but advises against consuming it on a regular basis.

Although Fire Cider is made from natural ingredients, it isn’t recommended for children or the elderly.

Always check with your health care professional before consuming the tonic as it may interfere or react with any medication that is being taken,” said Andrew.

For anyone attempting this drink at home, make sure your utensils have been sterilised and use glass or ceramic jars only – not plastic.

“Ensure that all contents are submerged under the vinegar for the duration of the fermentation process otherwise products risk becoming mouldy and recommend that only organic products are used and that it raw apple cider vinegar is used that contains the mother,” he said.

Top it off with a small amount of honey before consuming.
