What brows?

If you’ve neglected your brows for years, you’re not alone. They’re often put in the too hard basket because they’re either so fair or sparse and speckled with white hairs and therefore considered a lost cause.

All is not lost

You may have even forgotten what you look like with brows. Well get ready, with a little wrist action, they’ll be back. It might take a day or two to get used to them, but don’t give up. Keep your new brows soft and subtle and you’ll soon love the fresh new look they give you.

Line dancing

Brow shaping after 35 is about making the most of what’s left of your natural brows. Even if you only have thin brows, simply varying their thickness will make a big difference. The key is to make the inner half of your brows thicker than the outer tail end. This is how your natural brows were and it helps to lead the observer’s eye up and out. If they’ve been shaped into a ‘hook’ fill in the curve. Pencil or powder on the skin gives the illusion of more hairs.

What not to do

Never pluck long, coarse hairs or you’ll be left with more gaps. It’s best to trim any that extend beyond the brow shape. Most white hairs will be disguised by the pencil or powder but if they do need better coverage use a tinted brow wand. This will also help to keep your brows in shape.

Let’s get to work.

You’ll need:

Sharp tweezers, brow pencil or powder, spoolie brush (often at the end of a pencil) or a tooth brush, scissors if you have long hairs.

Step 1

To make the most of your existing brows stop plucking for six to eight weeks. This applies if you’ve been plucking regularly. Only remove hairs growing low on your orbital bones.

Step 2

Get to know where your brows should begin and end. The chances are they’re spreading apart and falling short at the ends. Once you’ve mapped out your brows it’s easy to see where they need to be filled in and which hairs can go.

Here’s how:

Starting point

Hold the pencil against one nostril and line up the other end of the pencil with the inner corner of your eye. Follow the line up to your brow. Make a dot. Repeat for the other brow.

Tail end

Angle the pencil against your nostril and line the other end up with the outer corner of your eye. Follow the line up to your brow and make a dot. Repeat for the other brow.

High point

To determine the high point or arch hold the pencil against your nostril and angle the other end up in line with the outer edge of your pupil. Follow the line up and make a dot. This is the highest point where hair naturally grows. Repeat for the other brow.

Step 3

Using the spoolie brush comb your brow hairs up towards the high point then smooth down the outer hairs towards the tail. Repeat for the other brow.

Step 4

Starting from the inner dot make light strokes with your pencil or use brow powder to create the look of hairs and fill in gaps. Repeat for the other brow.

Step 5

Use the spoolie brush to work the pencil or powder through your brow. If necessary fill in any remaining gaps. Repeat for the other brow.

Good to know

Your brows are like sisters, not twins. Keep this in mind when you’re trying the make them look the same otherwise, in the process, it’s easy to over-do the plucking.
