I commute 3 hours a day — these 5 time-saving cleaning hacks keep my house under control

A tidy home makes everything feel calmer, even in the middle of a chaotic week. And with a three-hour daily commute, I’ve learned that keeping things “perfect” isn’t realistic. But keeping things tidy? That’s non-negotiable.

For me, that doesn’t always mean spotless surfaces. It means a home that feels organised, calm and under control — even if there’s a “dump drawer” or even “dump room” hiding the chaos behind the scenes. Because after a long day (and a 90-minute commute home), the last thing I want is to walk into mess.

Over time, I’ve found a handful of simple, time-saving cleaning habits that keep things ticking along, without sacrificing my mornings, evenings or weekends.

1. Automate where I can

If there’s one thing that’s changed my weekly routine, it’s automation.

From setting the washing machine on a delay so it finishes when I get home, to scheduling a robot vacuum while I’m on the train, these small shifts make a huge difference.

The ECOVACS DEEBOT T90 PRO OMNI, quite frankly, saves my week. I used to spend weekends vacuuming endlessly — especially with two shedding kelpie dogs — but now I schedule it to run while I’m commuting to and from home. I walk into clean floors without lifting a finger.

What makes the biggest difference is the mopping function and how hands-free it is. One thing I find hard to fit in is a good mop of the floors, until now. The OZMO ROLLER 3.0 system has a self-washing roller mop that cleans as it goes and always with fresh water, so there’s no need to manually scrub floors or deal with dirty mop heads afterwards. It also uses intelligent mapping to scan my home, identify different floor types and adjust its cleaning automatically — something I didn’t realise I needed until I had it.

It’s also surprisingly thorough. The extended mop reach and edge-cleaning features mean it actually gets right into corners and along skirting boards (a personal pet peeve), while ZeroTangle brush heads handle the endless pet hair without clogging or constant detangling.

The PowerBoost fast-charging technology means it just keeps going. Although my home would be on the smaller end, overall, the floorspace adds up and it cleans all in one go, without stopping halfway through the job.

The best part? The daily pass-over, even without mopping means no marathon cleaning sessions on the weekend. Check out the BHG team review here:

2. Make it dirty once

It sounds simple but this tip, passed down from family and friends, is a gamechanger: batch the mess.

Meal prepping isn’t just about saving time cooking; it’s about reducing how often you clean. Instead of chopping vegetables every night, do it all at once. For example, if you need onions for multiple meals, prep them in one go. Wash, slice and store everything ahead of time. These resealable bags are ideal.

It’s a little messier upfront, but it means fewer dishes, fewer spills and far less cleaning across the week. One big clean-up beats five smaller ones in my opinion.

3. Create a ‘dump zone’

To keep me sane, I’ve realised that not everything needs to be perfectly organised all the time. And who has time for that anyway?

A “dump zone” — whether it’s a drawer, basket or small corner — gives you somewhere to quickly place the random bits that accumulate during the week. Think paperwork, reusable bags, a chair-robe with worn-but-clean items or simply, “I’ll deal with it later” items.

It keeps your main living spaces clear, so your home feels tidy, even when life gets busy. Then, when you have a spare moment (on the weekend for me), you can sort through it all in one go. Out of sight, out of mind really does work.

4. Prep the night before

When my mornings are rushed, everything feels harder.

Spending just 10–15 minutes the night before setting things up completely changes the tone of my morning day. I prep my outfit ( a collapsible door-hook is my must-have for this) work bag, lunch and even my exercise gear so I can roll straight into a morning walk with my dogs.

It’s also when I do a quick kitchen reset; wipe benches, load the dishwasher, and put things back in place. Waking up to a clean space makes the entire day feel more manageable and leaves me time to make the perfect cup of coffee.

5. Daily laundry habit

Laundry is one of those things that spirals quickly. For me, the biggest culprit wasn’t washing, it was putting everything away.

This year, I’ve adopted a simple rule: once it’s off the line, it gets put away immediately (or at least within the day). No more piles on the spare bed, no more weekend backlog.

I’ll admit, it’s a work in progress, however it’s a small habit that keeps clutter and clothes from creeping back in.

Keeping a home tidy during a busy week isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing things smarter. A few small systems, a little planning, and the right tools can make all the difference.

Because a calm home, is a calm mind.
