Slow cookers have changed the way home cooks prepare meals. That said, when any appliance is used as much as this one, especially unattended, it’s important to make sure it’s safe.
According to The Kitchn, manufacturers want their customers to be extra careful with the cord of the cooker.
“This bundle of wires has to work properly for hours at a time, so you really don’t want to damage it,” the publication explains.
Naturally, submerging the cord in water is a no-no. The same goes for letting it dangle below the bench for little hands to grab.
But the biggest concern is wrapping the slow cooker cord too tightly when packing it away.
“Doing this can stress the cord and cause the wires inside to break or pull out from the appliance,” The Kitchn explains. “When you do that, you’re bending the cord’s joint at a 90-degree angle, putting tons of strain on those wires.”
